Potential Move to Extender Mode
After having to annoyingly restore my bricked standalone HD200 using a sage server trial on my laptop I started to think, why I don't make the switch to extender and setup a sage server.
Any compelling reasons? My main requirement is to just watch movies from my QNAP NAS and show pictures. My first guess would be library size and speed of indexing and playing media. I don't use it to watch or record tv at all nor do i wish to. Better yet, my QNAP runs linux, can I install sage server on it somehow? It currently runs Twonky UPnP and it sucks. Well, at least Twonky is not for me. |

One of the biggest reasons, if you're not using TV, is the availability of customizations for SageTV (and therefore extenders). Customizations are possible on the standalone, but it seems none of the customization devs have devoted the resources to doing that.
As far as Sage on the QNAP, I'd think if you can get java running, you should be able to get Sage running. Problem is you're going to have to blow the $80 for a Linux license to find out. |

It stinks that Sage will not provide a linux trial license.
I wouldn't mind making the switch and the customizations would be nice. I think between moving the sage to a server and customizing the UI, i could greatly speed up the UI speed. The UI is my biggest pet peeve now. The IR receiver gets screwed up with my Harmony IR blaster resulting in non-responsive or over responsive button pushes. No other IR device I have has this problem. I've tried many different settings with no luck. So now, I press the button once, wait 1-2 seconds to see if the icons moves or moves too much. Very annoying! and the UI is especially erratic if the HD-200 is scanning my import folders. There seems to be a lack of UI CPU process devotion to UI functionality. So the result is the sage is unusable for music and photos, but tolerable for movies since I only have to "battle," and sometimes its a long one, with the UI once and let the movie play and leave it alone. I still wouldn't trade it for anything right now, but Sage should really look into improving it since many other competitors are starting to reach parity with the HD200 in standalone mode. |

Hm, I don't have any remote issues with my URC. As for a linux trial, yeah that would be nice, I'd like to give it a go.
You might want to report those performance issues to Sage. |
