Sage, wakeup and RAID

I've been a long time Sage user since version 3 I think. I've always either manually turned on my Sage server for a recording (back then) or leave it on 24/7 like I do now. I never had much luck with standby and tuners, although I haven't tried it since version 4.

Now that I have a full blown server with a RAID card, that option is not even on the table any more. I've read that my Highpoint RAID board doesn't come out of standby gracefully to power up the drives, and of course that would affect Sage too. However, I think my days of "playing" with RAID are coming to an end. With hard drives so friggin big these days, and since I back them up to a USB HDD, the novelty of running RAID at home is less important. When a hard drive dies, it's relatively easy just to replace it and restore the data. I'll move to JBOD from the onboard SATA controller and/or use Windows 2003 to combine them.

So.... If I were get rid of my RAID card, I would be back to a scenario where it's possible to keep my server in standby until I needed it, like to start a recording. Does that work well these days? Any gotchas, tuner limitations or other such configuration peculiarities one must do for it to be reliable?

You have to watch background processes, they are most likely to keep the system awake. The biggest problem with putting the Sage server to sleep is that the HD extenders don't support wake on LAN. So in most cases you can't wake the server up to watch TV from an extender.
