the pause

the "pause" is especially annoying during playoff baseball -- yankee/angels time slot ends, news slot begins hiccup, news ends, seinfeld begins hiccup and meanwhile the LIVE game is still going as they are in extra innings or just a slow game, but the system doesn't understand that I am watching the same channel for the last 5 hours so stop making "new" files, please.

I agree that the pause should be fixed but you would not have this problem if you set Sage to record this game and you were using SageRecordingExtender. It monitors ESPN.com and keeps extending your recording until the game is over.

When you are going to be watching live TV, you can also go into settings and set always tune channel to NO. Don't forget to set it back to YES after watching if you have frequent tuning problems.

That does not help, at least if you have a hd pvr, which still applies the ~4 second delay (which many people use). I have the "always tune" setting off, but I still get a pause, if a new show starts according to the guide.

I do have the delay set to 0 for my HD PVRs. I always run it that way though.

EDIT: Also, I was under the impression that the delay only occurred if the channel was retuned, regardless of the delay setting. My transition when watching live on the HD PVR is about one second.

YES!!!!

Fix it, it's really annoying especially when the pause and delay tuning "new" channel causes you to miss information you wanted to hear...

Watching lots of live TV by using SageTV is like constantly driving one of James Bond's cars through a school zone: sure it can do it, but man how much functionality you are losing.

Do you ever watch the news (or sports)? Do you have friends that like to watch sports, so you sometimes invite them over?

If you do care at all about these two viewing genre ... are you telling me you never watch them live? You schedule news programs in advance and watch them time-delayed? Really?

While others in my family watch live I do not. I never watch sports and yes, the few news shows I watch are scheduled in advance and watched afterwards. Not a big deal at all.

I always watch sports time delayed and using SRE. Can fast forward through the commercials and intermissions.

I always watch sports timed delayed as well so I can skip past the commercials and intermissions. Even if I want to watch sports "live" in Sage I always pad the end a lot so that I know I won't miss the end. With the padding added there is no pause.

I too watch almost everything delayed, included sports. NFL games are great. I start them about an 45-50 minutes delayed and skip the commercials and I usually catch up right around the end of the game. I always pad sporting events by an hour or 90 minutes so I never miss the ending. Only time I got burnt was the marathon Yankees - Red Sox games that last 5+ hours. LOL

Yes.

Are you telling us that you are home positioned in front of the tv at 6pm every night? really?

Funny thing there. SageTV is perfect for friendly gatherings. Set to record in advance with additional end padding. Don't have to worry about people showing up late, trips in and outside dealing with the food on the grill, kids fighting over toys and crying.. all solved by SageTV's wonderful pause, rewind, and skip features.

Would I give up those features so a harmless pause that never affects me can be fixed? NO.

I never said every night. Come on.

Does it have to be "every night" to be a problem? If it's only a couple times a week, then it's OK. Is that your point?

Yes, there are lots of us who watch LiveTV every day. There's no reason to be dismissive towards us.

I would suggest reading this survey that appeared in the last issue of "The Economist" about the current state of television. Let me quote from one of the articles:

...This helps explain one of the oddest
and most consistent findings of television
research: that people seem unaware of
their own behaviour. In surveys they al-
most always underestimate how much
television they watch, and greatly over-
state the extent to which they watch video
in any other form (see chart 4). In particu-
lar, they underestimate their consumption
of live television. One of Ms Pearson’s sub-
jects, a 27-year-old man, claimed to watch
recorded television 90% of the time. In fact
he watched live TV 69% of the time. He was
probably not so much fibbing as misinter-
preting the question. When asked how he
watched television, he gave an answer that
described his behaviour when he was
alone, and thus did not have to compro-
mise. But most of the time he watched
with other people.

Yep, like about 99% of the rest of the "working people" in the world who come home in the evening and turn to the news channel to keep abreast of current world and local "news" everyday. What planet did you come from?
