intelligent Recording

Okay, I am getting close to understanding SageTV so the questions will stop soon.
I don't understand I.R. (am I un-intelligent? )
Look, I don't want my freaken harddrive constantly churning and then when I open my folder I see crap like the local news! local news...around here 11pm the news is old...
What I am saying is that it is cool but for now it is not for me.
Can I set my recorder to record the Soprano's every Sunday night at 8pm on channel 320, not on the Latin channel just 320 once and only once?
Please?
I think what will happen is I will get it recording the stuff I like I will get comfortable with the app, my wife will get off my back for forgetting to record American Idol and then I will go "hmmm what is this I.R. and how can it suggest more shows for me?"

Thanks for your help guys I really love the quality. Out of the box it kicks butt.
Brian

If you turn IR off, SageTV will only record Live TV, manual recordings, timed recordings (which I haven't played with yet), & Favorites. So, you can: 1) remember to set up a manual recording each week (yuck), 2) try out the timed recordings & set one to recrod your show, hoping that it never changes time, or 3) set up a favorite for your show & specify that it should record ONLY the First Runs (best option, in my opinion).

Using the Favorite method... If your guide data is correct, it should only record 1 copy of each new episode. If the data is wrong regarding first run/rerun status... you might be in trouble. The release notes say that favorites will be able to be marked for specific channels in the future.

Still getting Latin versions, but don't speak Latin? You could always remove that channel from your listings...

I hated IR too when I first started usig SageTV, but has grown on me a bit. I still have to fight it, but at least I have things to watch when everything else is in repeats.

I figure why not use IR. When the PVR is doing nothing else, and I have empty space, fill it with SOMETHING. Sometimes I find cool movies like the other day (revenge of the nerds, yesss!)

Sadly, this week IR is stuck on food shows. I have never watched a food show. I hit dont like to 100+ food shows, but it keeps going. *sigh*

Laugh! I did that.

Okay, I'll shut up and adapt. I hate change at first always have but it is for the better. I too would like to have something to watch when my library of goodies are all gone.

Can you imagine the Latin food channel? snnnoooze

If you don't speak or understand Spanish & Latin it's best to remove them from your guide along with any of the HD channels since you can't record them anyway. I've also removed the ton of music only channels from my guide since I don't want these recorded either.

There is a common misunderstanding that IR will record constantly. Tahts nt the case. It only records based on your previous viewing habits. When I had it turned on in 1.4.1, it maybe recorded 7 shows a day.

That's right. IR's goal is not to try and fill up your hard drive. It just takes it a while to get good direction from you. When I first enabled IR and I watched a news show, it started recrding all kinds of news show. Not every news show, but a lot. You just need to stay on top of the "Don't Like" button for the first month or so and it starts working a whole lot better. I've been pleasantly surprised many of times when I got home and said, "Well that's cool-I didn't even know that movie was on."

falchulk & gplasky: I don't remember -- do you 2 have single or multiple tuners? I've been running IR since late last year & it still tries to fill up nearly all the time available for every newly scheduled day. I've got 2 tuners & it is a constant battle to mark all those new IR shows as Don't Like. I haven't done the calculations, so I could be overestmating this, but it sometimes seems like half or more of the new day's schedule is filled with junk that I have never indicated any interest in. It has been a few months & it doesn't let up.

I agree that it doesn't record _all_ the time, but it sure is a lot.

It's been an ongoing battle for me also. If you think it's bad with 2 tuners, try having 8 of them

Since Dec (3 tuners) I've been on top of it and there is no let up. Matter of fact I keep telling it over and over again that I don't want some shows.

I also wish there was a setting in IR to totally eliminate RE-RUNS so they never get recorded. That alone would dramitacally help out with the sitcoms it wants to keep recording.

The vast majority of shows on TV at any one time are reruns. That would kind of eliminate a lot of the reason people use IR.

I have 3 tuners going with about 25 favorites. I have IR trained to only record movies that I like. Every now and then as I watch my favorites it starts to add in a couple of shows that are reruns or similar to my favorites but a couple of don't likes removes them for awhile. I would like a "Never Record" option, but then I would also need a place to remove that flag.

bigbri,

Also make sure that when you are not using SageTV you try to put the application to Sleep. That will eliminate any confusion if you walk away with the application still in LiveTV mode and it doesn't know you stopped watching.

Is my IR broken in some way, then? I can't seem to convince it that I really don't like wrestling & horror movies, among other things. (Wrestling & horror shows don't show up every day, but they do appear fairly regularly.) Then, the other day, I know I hit one move as Don't Like & a while later it rescheduled the same move in a different time slot, though I'm not sure if it was on a different channel.

I wish there were some IR settings, such as:

1) Limit to XXGb, or just fill one directory.

2) Limit it to XX hours of IR a day

3) Disable/enable certain genres. (?)

4) Disable/enable certain channels. Some channels don't play much I like -- I don't really want to remove them from the lineup, but I don't want IR choosing Lifetime movies all day/every day, for example.

5) Be able to put off a recording w/o saying it was watched or not liked -- just don't record it now. Perhaps this would fall better under a "watched shows retain watched status for X amount of time" global option?

Other ideas?

When you mark them as Don't Like, to they get a black border around them?

Yeah it has a hard time finding shows between 2am and 6am to record for me.

And what's wrong with wrestling and horror shows?

Seriously though I wonder what genre Wrestling falls unders. If you have a favorite with the same genre it probably takes longer for IR to get the idea. Same with the horror shows. If you start looking at the long list of stars you might find an actor that is also in one of your favorites. These type seem to take the longest to get rid of.

I know one time I had left the main menu up all night when I fell asleep and for awhile IR thought I needed to have "Paid Programming" recorded. Took awhile of marking those "Don't like" until it finally got the idea.

Gerry

Oh yeah-2 tuners.

Yes, they do get the black border & usually disappear from the schedule after the fist marking. The "mark the show, it goes away, it comes back later in the day" problem only seems to happen once in a while. I realize I could be mistaken, but it really looked like Psycho II showed up twice the other day. Unfortunately, I do not write all the shows on a piece of paper, so I can't be absolutely certain that it isn't my imagination. I also haven't checked the log to see if there is any IR reference to what it is choosing.

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with wrestling & horror shows... as long as they play on someone else's TV. There probably is some strange connection between those shows & something else that I actually watched. Hmmm... CNN was on for a while the other day... between the political wrestling & the horror of another campaign season, I suppose that explains it all.

My IR records like 8 hours a day on a single tuner. A lot of it cool, a lot crap I have to yell at it for.

I now have two tuners. I have seen gaps in the recording schedulre where basically the choice was paid programming and something I marked as "Don't Like", it doesn't recording anything.

With that said, for the most part, it tries to put something there. If you watch the upcoming recordings and mark don't likes you'll actually see the upcoming changing.

Is there a way to mark all shows of a series as don't like? The way I see it the dont like should work the same as the favorites (ie: marking all of the series) It doesn't make sense to me to mark each episode idividually.
