SageTV Recordings

I need some help on the best way for multiple viewers to ensure that a recently watched program is not deleted before others are able to view it.

I have read posts regarding similar situations, but still do not understand the best process to keep this from happening. We have tried to select 'restart" on the recording and ald "clear watched". The worst part is that sometimes the recordings stay available and other times they delete. without any consistency it is hard to establish a policy for the family to follow.

Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks

We do have it set to "keep always" I thought we did, but waited until I got home to check.
Have you never lost a recorded program for some unknown reason? We have some shows that the kids watch as well as us. I am now fearful that the recording will be deleted before we get a chance to see it. I would like to give the family a procedure to follow for shared recordings.

Have you considered turning off the prompt that allows people to delete shows after playback? This is under Detailed Setup -> Customize. You can set it to "Ask only for non-auto delete recordings", "Ask for every recording", or "Never". If you set it to "Never", then it would need to be deleted from the recordings list and the option to delete wouldn't even be available after playback.

We have it set to "always" ask as it mirrored our Tivo's the closest in our change to Sage. The users are fairly saavy to not delete recordings, but are you saying that with the option on the recordings are more at risk to be deleted?
My wife said she had watched only half of a show, paused it because she wanted me to see a portion of it and when she went back, it was gone. We thought about selecting "save" also to ensure the recording stayed, but the option is not aleways available...

Since it's the first option in SageMC (Delete and Set Watched), I know I'm so used to using that one after watching a show that even when I don't want to, I have mistakenly deleted a show.

If you want to see why/when a recording is deleted, check the debug log. If they are getting automatically deleted due to disk space, then see Appendix C in the PDF manual about the order of files getting auto-deleted & which ones are never auto-deleted.

If the files are being deleted by users, then there isn't much to be done except train the users, depending on which STV you are using.

Have you checked to make sure the files are actually being deleted from disk, and that you haven't just set the UI to exclude watched shows from the recordings list?

I thought that when you told Sage to delete a show, it only removed it from the recordings list and was actually deleted from disk only when space was needed. Is that not the case? I want to make sure we aren't giving incorrect information and that I understand correctly as well.

In the stock UI, when you manually delete a recording, the file gets deleted immediately from disk. Recordings that are eligible for autodeletion still show up in the recordings list (unless they're excluded by view filters for other reasons). The only time a recording might be removed from the database but not deleted from disk is if there's a permissions problem accessing the directory for deletion.

That said, if you have autodeletion enabled for a favorite, and you have your recordings list filter set to exclude Watched shows, then when you mark an episode Watched it will simultaneously disappear from the list (because of the filter) and become eligible for deletion when space is needed (because of the autodelete setting). But that's a different case from manually deleting recordings with the Delete command, which deletes them right away.
