"For Dummies" DVD Storage/Playing

Folks - I've searched around and found so much information here that I am even more confused...

My goal:
1 - Store DVD's "as is" (copy from DVD Media to Hard-Drive. No converting.)
2 - Play on Extenders (currently HD100's)

Result:
A few DVD's play fine - others have like a 3 second interval of "hangs", and pixelation in both video and sound throughout.

What I think is the Problem/Resolution:
I need to add software such as AnyDVD or DVD43 to my Server, because the issue I am seeing is due to Encryption methods, which I just copied to the Hard-Drive with the no-frills copy from DVD Media to Hard-Drive.

Am I on the right track? And, AnyDVD or DVDF43 are good solutions because they decrypt "on the fly"?

Thanks for any feedback on this!
I see it has been talked about numerous times - but it seemed to revolve around shrinking and removing features and such, which is more then I am trying to achieve... I just wanna' store and play the "DVD"...

One easy way to do what you want is to get ImgBurn (free, http://www.imgburn.com) and use it to rip the DVD to your hard disk. ImgBurn will remove the protection and leave everything else intact.

Imgburn doesn't rip commercial DVDs. You would need to look at AnyDVD or DVDFab. These can do the full disc.

I'm in the dummy category. I use DVDfab. I just load a dvd in my laptop, change the title to get rid of the _ 's between teh words, and hit the start button. I just walk away. When DVDfab is finished, it opens the drive door and makes a sound.

I have had great luck copying directly into the proper folder on my WHS server.

Give it a try...

Thanks for the feedback!

So, what I should be doing is using a Decryption enabled program (such as AnyDVD or DVDFab) to actually copy the DVD (as is) to the Hard Drive - rather then plain old Windows Explorer... Removing the Decryption during the copy, rather then during playback (which the extenders can't do)... Correct?

Yes, correct.

I use AnyDVD HD. Works great.

I use AnyDVD with DVD Shrink to rip only the main movie (no trailers, menus, etc) to the HD. Then use my HD100 w/SageMC to organize/play them.

Works great.

DVDFAB HD will do this in one program and free.

I was under the impression that the free version (DVDFab HD Decrypter) didn't support "movie only" ripping, only the pay version.

Never paid for it, always do Movie Only. It works perfectly! Using 6.01 (err whatever the newest release) is as I write this on my Windows 7 Machine. Works great! The only time I rip the entire disk is if it is TV DVD (with multiple episodes).

I didn't know that, it's been a while since I used it I thought it was the follow up to DVD Decryptor, which did support ripping commercial DVDs?

Same code base, different product. I'm pretty sure he was asked to remove the decrypting process.

I already have a DVD ripped to my hard drive with AnyDVD. Can I use ImgBurn to burn the DVD folder onto the DVD?

I tried using ImgBurn, selecting "Write files / folders to disk", then browse to source folder, selected the Video_TS folder, then select "build". I then confirmed the volume label. At that point, ImgBurn wants to create "layer break position". I don't understand what that means.

I just need to burn the files onto a DVD that were already ripped onto the hard drive. So maybe there is an easier way, such as just using DVD burning software, like Nero.

I checked out the DVDFab web site. It looks like there are two versions. One for standard DVDs and the other for Blue Rays. It does not look like the Blue Ray version will also do standard DVDs. So, if my assumption is correct, you would need both programs if you wanted to rip both standard video DVDs and Blue Rays.

With DVDFab you can license what you need all in one version. I use mine for regular DVDs but I have the option of trying the BD part of it and then eventually licensing it if I want.

Follow this guide to use Imgburn to burn your DVD to a single-sided disk.
Burning DVD Video files directly to single layer media with ImgBurn

Thanks for the helpful link on using ImgBurn Gerry! I did try using DVDFab for standard DVDs, and it looks pretty good. There's a 20% discount that ends tomorrow, so I think I will buy it.

It looks like the DVDFab DVDs only does standard DVDs and the Blueray version only does Bluerays. So to do both types of media, both software packages would need to be purchased. If standard DVDs were included with the Blueray version, then I would buy the more expensive Blueray version instead.

Personally, I prefer AnyDVD-HD, as it does great decryption on the fly with anything (DVD or BluRay). Then I can choose what app i want to manipulate the disc, or just drag-n-drop copy the entire thing. I don't bother with the whole 'DVDFab movie only' thing, as, if all i want is the main movie, I'd rather just make it a single file MKV.

Someone briefly mentioned DVDShrink and I'll mention it's worked flawlessly for me with any of my discs. Whole disc, movie only, etc. Save the output out as standard folders or as a disk image. It does a very good job of re-compressing and re-authoring as well if you ever wanted to write back to disc what you've previously ripped (though it's not something I use it for).

It's free.

I also use this, I think over the years (since 2003) there has been only one disc that it hasn't been able to handle. It is a DVD only solution, but in my mind it is one of the easiest to use DVD solutions and easily lets you choose which portions of the movie you want to keep, even including a preview window so you can see what a given segment includes for video. This was handy when I was snagging just previews from the discs.
