some files will not defragment
I have two 250G partitions on a 500G drive. That drive is strictly for Sage data.
One of the partitions is heavily fragmented, practically all red. There is still 67G (30%) of free space. After defragmenting, the display is practically still all red and the report lists about 15 files that could not be defragmented. I wonder why this is? The reason I started looking in the first place is that sometimes there are some glitches when playing back. Thanks for any ideas.

What operating system are you using? What are you using to defrag the drive?
It can make a difference which operating system you use. For example, Windows XP Home cannot defrag 64K block drives, while Windows XP Pro can. Usually after market defraggers work better than the one included with Windows. I use Perfect Disk. I only defrag when SageTV is shut down because I heard of problems being caused defragging while SageTV is running. You might also look elsewhere for the problem too. For example, if you are using an MVP and do not have all the ports open between the MVP and the computer, it will work, but will sometimes have problems streaming to the MVP. Dave |

You may also want to find a program that can consolidate or defrag free space. Typically, recorded tv shows are large file sizes. If the defragmentation program can not find enough contiguous free space on the drive to complete the operation, it may say that the file can not be defragmented. Consolidating free space can resolve this problem. Unless you are just plain low on free disk space.

Try defragging in safe mode, too.

Diskkeeper works great for me... continually, in the background... so I never have to 'think' about it.
