Problems Post-Java Update?

Noticed that SageTV thought it was 8 Pm when SysTime was 7 PM.

Browsed the forums, found the Java update thing.

Updated Java.

Re-booted the server.

Now the SageTV service seems tb stuck on "Starting" and the server, in spite of being able to open www.ipchicken.com, cannot be pinged from another PC on the LAN and cannot ping any of the other PCs on the LAN.

When I try to start SageTV directly (by clicking on the program icon) there's an hourglass for maybe half a second and then nada.

When I try to open up MyComputer | Manage | Services and disable the SageTV service (still "Starting"), the SageTV Properties dialog hangs with an hourglass/"Not Responding".

OTOH, the other PCs can ping each other.

Tried re-booting a couple times, no luck.

Understood that correlation is not causation.

Having said that, has anybody heard of something like this?

This seems to be happening with some users lately because they see a notice that there is a java update available and they go ahead and click it to update. You MUST stop the SageTV service and/or quit SageTV (not sleep to the try) BEFORE beginning any java update. If you are now hosed go ahead and make sure all of SageTV is topped. Uninstall java. And go and download the latest version (version 6 build 12) After the install of jave reboot your server so you get a clean startup and everything should load and work correctly. And I would recommend turning off the auto updating java and just turn the notification completely off. If you frequent the forums you'll know when a new version of java is out.

If you had Sage running as a service and didn't stop it before installing Java then that could be the problem with Sage not starting. If Sage is set to start automatically then you need to reboot to Safe mode and set it to Manual. Then reboot and remove and re-install Java. Then you should be able to start the service and set it back to Automatic.

With me it was SageTV's clock being an hour ahead of the sytem clock. Googled a little, saw the Java update thing, and shot myself in the foot.

Done. Whew!....

My take-away from this is "Don't mess with Java.".

Thanks gPlasky.

Thanks ToriCred.

But SageTV is *still* an hour ahead of the PC's systime.

Any suggestions? (that don't include Java.... )

I just noticed that I've got Setup | Detailed Setup | General | Synch System Clock With SageTV Server = Enabled.

Any chance that's a player? Seems backwards on the face of it. Why would I want "SageTV Server" to change my PC's System Clock? Or does the "SageTV Server" have some independent source of the time?

BTW, I just confirmed that the version of Java now on the server is "Version 6 Update 12 (build 1.6.0_12-b04)" and updates are most definately turned off. I even turned off the notification - against the day when it would pop and I hadn't gotten my IQ above room temp that day and thoughtlessly pulled the trigger on the update.

Google for a tzedit program to see if that helps you. tzedit is for your Windows OS. Google for TZUpdater if you truly believe it is a java issue. I would look at tzedit first and the Windows OS. This is probably the issue especially if you have not kept up with all the updates and patches.

Your PC needs to sync periodically with some external time source to keep its clock from drifting. By default Windows PCs sync to a server at time.windows.com or some such. Enabling this option in Sage causes Sage to periodically sync your clock to a server at Sage World Domination HQ. This should be a pretty reliable source of "TV time" for keeping your recording schedule on schedule, so to speak.

Personally I leave this option turned off since I have my home network set up to sync with a NIST atomic clock time source.

I don't know enough to implicate any of the moving parts.

Bottom line, though, is that my PC's SysTime is correct and SageTV's screens are incorrect (Sage's numers are an hour ahead).

Does that tell us anything?

Could it still be a Windows issue - e.g. some middle-man/API call that Sage uses returning the wrong time?

Is there a reason you haven't updated to SP3? I believe MS stopped supporting SP2 some time ago, so if you haven't updated to SP3, there could be DST fixes you're not getting. My advice would be to get your OS completely up to date and see if the problem still happens.

Too many negative reports in the Windows.General NG.

But that just became moot as my copy of Windows Home Server was waiting for me when I got home from work.

Did the initial install of the system only.

As soon as I dope out the file scheme and copy my recordings and movies to it, I'll get on with putting the WHS version of Sage on it.

(He said with fingers crossed....)
