Surround Sound for TV not working

I have my Sage TV computer connected to my Denon reciever via an optical cable that is running from my Creative Xi-Fi sound card. When I am watching DVD's the reciever flips itself into Dolby Digital surround just as it should. I'm using the AC3 filter for DVDs and sending the raw audio stream to my Denon for processing. The problem that I have is when I am watching regular cable television from ComCast. I seem to only be able to get stereo L/R sound. I've tried the different audio renders that are available with no change. Is there a way to get surround sound from my cable provider through my HVR-1600 card?

I know some HD broadcasts carry 5.1 but most regular TV is only stereo. In this case the best you can hope for is to convert to pro logic either at the receiver assuming it can do so or at the PC prior to passing to the receiver. In the latter case you need a 5.1 capable sound card and to input all outputs from this to the receivers 5.1 inputs if it has them.

By "Regular cable" I assume you mean analog, that doesn't carry discrete surround, only (at most) stereo, or Dolby Surround.

Try enabling the Dolby Pro Logic, or Dolby Pro Logic II(x) mode on your AVR.
