Sage server on ARM?

I've read that the sage server runs on a custom build of gentoo. I presume this is for x86 only.

Any idea if there is any potential support for running it on ARM? (I know the extenders run on an ARM processsor, I'm thinking of the main server.)

I saw some sweet hardware that would make Sage the supergroovy of HTPCs. So I thought I'd ask.

If you're referring to the Marvell wall-wart form factor PC, unfortunately I don't think it's entirely feasible from a hardware perspective. You'd need more memory at the very least, and probably more performance than you could get out of the wall-wart PC.

From a software perspective, I think it's completely infeasible, as I don't think anyone's released a JRE for Arm/Linux.

The marvell wall-wart form factor server does look like a pretty neat package, though.

Awww....you read my mind. :^)

I seem to recall someone here on the Forum that runs an AMD T-bird @ 1.2ghz. Performance on ARM would be about equivalent. And 512 would also be fine to herd the database along as long as you were looking only for a media extender installation to handle display. (The Marvell unit doesn't have a display.)

I guess I'm just tickled with the idea of a server consuming 5W for the whole board. Obviously adding storage boosts that, as would adding memory. But can you think of the difference in power saving that such a beast would offer?

I've got an VIA EPIA 400mhz with 512mb ram and a 512mb CF boot drive. It has a complete DVI package with it connected to the Chrome video chipset. Worthless for trying to even play back Sage. But it would be very, very interesting to see how STV performed on it as a server. The EPIA (fanless) consumes a mere 55W of power. (Nameplate rating, so probably less.)

Perhaps this is what I'll do with some time off from work coming up.

Several posters point out that the Extenders are running on an ARM - so I doubt placing the Server is "infeasible". And I wouldn't underestimate the SheevaPlug :-)
