adding full drives to WHS pool, just making sure

Ok I just want to check that I am going to be going about this correctly.

I have 4tb of full drives on my WHS not in the pool. I want to add them.

So I have to get 4tb of discs, install them, add them to the pool, do the 64k conversion thing, then copy all the info from the old discs to the newly pooled discs then I can add the old ones to the pool.

I think that is pretty straight forward.... and expensive but correct right?

You could run through the process 4 times instead and buy less disks...

1. Buy and install 1 new TB disk. 64k conversion
2. Copy data from largest full drive to pool, verify.
3. Install largest drive in pool, 64k conversion
4. copy data from second largest full drive to pool, verify
5. Install second largest drive, 64k conversion

Repeat ad naseum until all drives are in pool.


Saves $$$, wastes time. Depends on how much you value your time...

just to be clear the method is this:

1) buy additional drive (size of current hard drives or bigger)
2) add new disk to pool and do 64KB conversion on it
3) remove a drive from the pool (forces the copy of data off of it)
4) add it back and fo 64KB conversion
5) repeat steps 3&4 until all drives converted over to 64KB.

Sorry, now I'm confused. I currently have 1 drive in the pool, the system/data drive C and D:

D has 300mb free.
I have 4tb of media on other drives, to add to the pool.
If I add a new 2tb drive to the pool, 64 convert, would I not copy the files from one of the managed drives to the pool through explorer?
I don't understand #3 remove a drive to force a copy.

I thought once the copy is done to the pool, the managed drive I just copied from should be added to the pool which will format it and do the 64 conversion. Then repeat said steps for other managed drives... no?

I have read about your app and will be putting it to use.

Beefcake is talking about my tutorial for formatting multiple drives to 64K. If you only have one drive and it's almost full, when you add the empty drive it's going to try to start to move data. I suggest freeing up some space on the D drive (temporarily) before adding the first drive to the pool and when you add it, be sure to immediately format to 64K or use the "convert method" after all drives are added. You will need to move the data from the unmanaged drive to the pool before you can add that unmanaged drive to the pool.
