Sage on Debian.

Any one using Sage on Debian ?

I`m planing of do some test on a Debian DomU (Xen Virtualization..), i have a Dell PowerEdge SC1420 with Debian Etch as host system an a few Debian Etch DomU, i`m planning of moving out Sage from my WHS box at home but first i want to do some testing, at home i have 2 MediaMVP so there is no need of X Server on Debian DomU. Any help installing Sage on Debian? or i just download the .deb package in dpkg it on my Debian DomU? of course i have to install java...

I'm using Sage on Ubuntu.... I just installed java6, then the sage .deb.... just beware that the .deb installer will ask for your sage license key on install.... if you don't have a key, then the installer is left in a bit of bad state...

I'm also using sagetv on ubuntu. Along with java install I'd also recommend installing the quicktime libs because it does a real nice job of decoding m4v and mp4 videos on the fly. The other big thing is that I learned the hard way is MAKE SURE YOUR CAPTURE CARD IS SUPPORTED IN THE KERNEL. If not you will have a never ending headache trying to get it working (if it even ever does decide to work). I don't know what Debian version you have but you will also need the ivtv packages (Ubuntu comes with them already in versions 8.04 and above).

The inital install on my ubuntu system was a snap. What I've had problems with:

Getting my old crappy avermedia card working (never did.. gave up and got a wintv500 MCE dual tuner and it worked out of the box)

Getting a cheap Helius branded MediaMVP working (haven't figured that one out yet)

Getting Wireless MediaMVP over the wire (I'm also using my box as my wireless AP/internet router) looks like that was a firewall issue, I'll know for sure tonight.

Getting Wireless MediaMVP to get an IP address from my linux server running dhcp3. I haven't figured this one out for sure.. but just started researching this today. Everyone that is reporting this problem is running a Netgear router but not having problems with linksys routers. Well guess what.. my wireless card is a netgear. Thankfully I have a spare linksys 54g extreme that I can drop in there and see if I can get it working with that. I'll let you know.

Once I got the cards setup in linux it was a snap. Placeshifter/Client both work great over my wireless network. I'm really only having a problem with the MediaMVP's currently.

The thing is... i`m planning to take off Sage from my WHS box and put it on Debian, the deal here is that the Debian is a DomU (Xen Virtualization), but looks like its gonna take more time since i don't know if this is will work i cant buy the license just for test..

I have doubts about virtualization, as there needs to be para-virtualized drivers to get performance. I don't think I've ever seen anyone here claim to have Sage running under virtualization (Xen or any other). USB support is an issue. I'd love to find out if and how it would work. I have played with Xen a bit and found it lacking for Sage.

I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if something pops up!

Good Luck!

I bet for most home theater pc tasks, virtualization without para-virt drives works just fine. Para-virt really shines when you have several VMs. With a single VM or two, I don't think you'll see noticeable improvement. There will be a problem with the capture cards not being seen by the VM. Most virtualization solutions do not pass through arbitrary PCI/PCIe cards. If you have USB capture cards, this should work (I know VMware will pass through nearly all USB without a problem, don't know about Xen). If you had something like a HDHomerun you'd be in better shape.

Xen will pass any PCI hardware, the problem here is the key, is hard to buy a license just for testing purpose.
