SageTV + 4GB Ram = BSOD

When I first started using SageTV on Vista64 I was constantly getting BSOD errors. I eventually decided that the problem had something to do with the HDPVR drivers on Vista64 and dropped down to Vista32. I took out my 4th GB of Ram because my video card has 1GB of Ram and Vista32 can only use up to 4GB of Ram in total, so I thought I could use the extra GB in another PC. Anyway, the BSOD's stopped occuring so I thought I had confirmed the problem was Vista64 (not thinking of the Ram). So it's about a month and a half later and last night I decided to try putting the 4th GB of Ram back into the computer. I wasn't 10 minutes into watching something in SageTV when I got the same BSOD. Is this a known issue? Is there anything I can do to fix this? I would like to use Vista64.

Thanks in advance for any help!

It could be your RAM or your mobo, I run 8G in vista64, using the Sage Client, with no issues. I don't run more than 2G or 3G in a 32bit OS.

its got to be your hardware config, Server 2008 x64 here is a ton of ton ram and not a single issue.

On a another note. when running X64 system, you are still forced to install x86 java version to make Sage run. And the x86 version of Java can only see and use 4096 megs of ram, that's the limits of x86 java/x86 OSes. So it doesn't really matter how over the top you are , it wont make a lick of difference.

I am running Vista64 with 4GB of ram and Sage as a process along with the client front end. I have never seen a BSOD.

J Mo - This site is your friend: MemTest86+

Memtest86+ does high-speed continuous hard testing of your RAM.

Download the latest ISO image, burn a CD, and boot from the CD. Install your full 4GB of RAM, and let it run overnight. If you show any errors at all, your RAM (and/or motherboard) is defective.

BTW, be sure that you do not do any hard drive defragging until you know that your RAM is perfect. Defragging while you have defective RAM is the quickest way to seriously corrupt your hard drive without your knowledge (Why? Because defragging software puts every file being defragged into RAM before it gets rewritten onto the hard drive)

Let us know what you find out!

Are you running any Hauppauge cards on the system? Someone else would have to confirm this, but I thought some of the Hauppauge drivers don't like 4GB of RAM. I thought this was a known problem, and one Hauppauge has been slow to fix.

Reggie those drivers dont cause BSOD, the 500 Analog card just show a no signal when 4gb of ram are installed.

Also Vista cd offers a great and free memory tester, just start the computer and boot the setup DVD and run the memory tool.

Also check your mainboard BIOS and see if theres an update. Also if your overclocking turn it down, and check your memory settings.

thats a good start.

hope you find the problem.

Memtest86 your memory. If you have more than 4 gigs installed, you need to use the 64-bit ISO. If you get errors, pull all but one stick and test each stick individually. Also try any defective sticks in other slots/channels, as sometimes slots go bad on the motherboard.

Also, make sure you are fully up-to-date on Microsoft Updates. Vista x64 pre-SP1 had PCI addressing issues with 4GB+ installed.
