Client and server drive mappings

I have a sageTV server that has 3 external USB drives.. I wanted to change their mapping within Sage to use UNC so that comskip would work correctly on my SageTV Client.. I had no problem mapping the physical drives, but the USB drives don't have an admin share??

\\server\d$\recordings

This works fine on my physical drive D.. but drive 'E' which is a USB drive doesn't have an Admin$..

Any ideas how I can get around that.. short of taking the drive out of the external structure and putting it inside (which I may try to do anyhow), but in the meantime??

Right click on My Computer -> Management -> Shared Folders -> and shares
Then add the shared drives you want. The physical disks are shared by default in windows. The others you have to add yourself.

It's not really good practice to use those C$ and D$ admin shares for routine file access anyway. They're really meant for maintenance and troubleshooting purposes only. For normal use, create new shares for just the specific directories your client needs to access.

The advantage of doing it this way is that the UNC names then don't include the drive letter and physical path, just the server name and logical share name. So if you need to juggle drive letters or physical directories around from disk to disk on your server for some reason, you can do it without breaking any network clients because the share names and UNC paths can stay the same.

As long as you're going to the trouble of changing over to UNC paths, you might as well do it right and save yourself some trouble later.
