Network access with Sage as Service?
Since switching to using SageTV as a service, Sage cannot access any network shares. The service is running with the user of LOCALSYSTEM.
I tried to change it to the machine's default user, but then it demands a password be set, and I would rather not put a password on the HTPC system. Is there any workaround to allow the service running as LOCALSYSTEM to access the network?

The ONLY way to run a service with a user is with a password. Microsoft rules. And you'll want to use UNC paths, not mapped drives.

If you don't want to use a password when you boot your server then download TweakUI from Microsoft's XP PowerToys. This wll allow you to have your password and automatically logon on startup. Note: TweakUI will not work on Vista.

If the service is set to run as a dedicated user then I don't see any reason not to set it up with a password, you only have to input it if you need to log in as that user? I would never run any machine witha blank password on a network that has internet access, ever. If someone does get in it makes life so much easier for them. Strong mixed alphanumeric upper and lower case passwords always, unless you have a very good reason not to and have all other security sewn up very very tightly.
Regardless, if you wish to run the desktop as the same user the TweakUI suggestion is perfect, I use this method on some of my clients so that the family can just hit the power button to start the system. However, as far as I am aware the only time it is a problem running the service as a different user than the desktop on the same machine is if you are using a usbuirt on that machine. |
