There is an Acronyms for SageTV topic at the top of the General section of the forum, which covers some terms.

An Extender is a device used at a TV to play SageTV recordings & other media files. It connects to the SageTV server PC over your network. It is usually much cheaper & quieter than a PC would be. You can have a single server & use an extender at each TV rather than using PCs at each TV.

Placeshifter is the SageTV software you can use to connect back to your SageTV server via the internet from a remote location. You can carry an extender with you & do that too.

SageTV Studio is the development tool to create the SageTV interface & its features.

SageMC is covered in the acronym topic... it is a custom interface created using Studio.

You can record HD from an STB via the Hauppauge HD-PVR, connected to the STB via component cables.
