Updating EPG manually

Ok so about 2 months ago I canceled my broadband subscription and decided to just use my phone's data connection to update Sage's EPG data. But I have a problem updating the EPG manually, here is the scenario:

Say I restart sagetv service at Noon and I have internet access at that time(with the phone). The EPG updates normal. The EPG updates every 24 hours. So say in 24 hours I don't have my phone hooked up and the EPG can't update, and say I come in at 1:00(25 hours after initial update) and try to initiate an update manually(either using nielm's webserver or Andy's enable/disable channel trick) it will not update.

But had I came in before Noon (<24 hours after initial update) I could have done a manual update just fine.

So therefore if I don't have my phone hooked up at the same time everyday or manually update anytime <24 hours, I have to restart the service before I can get the EPG to update.

Is there anything I can do to get the EPG to update without stopping and restarting the service? Is this a bug I should report or by design?

Thanks,

Miller

There's a FAQ:
Can I force the Guide to be updated?

I have tried your FAQ trick by toggling a channel in the source setup but it still does not update. It will update fine on its own if I have my phone hooked up to the server with a live data connection at the 24 hour mark. But if I don't catch it at the 24 hour mark (or before for manual update) I have to restart the service, the manual update will not work.

If the connection failed for the last EPG update attempt, it will keep trying, waiting a while between each attempt.

How long are you waiting for the update to occur? It can wait a few minutes after the last attempt before it will try again.

Sometimes it may be 3 or 4 days after the last successful epg update before I try to do another one. I would say I have left the internet connection live for approximately at least 1 hour after trying to do a manual update, with no luck. But as soon as I restart the service the update starts immediately. I will try to put together some log files.

Yes, the debug log from the server would be useful.

Here is my log file. I initiated a manual update at 4:20pm and the EPG data wasn't downloaded. Hope you guys can get something out of it.

That log is full of some other type of error message. Please disable all customizations and try again. Also, as the FAQ I posted above mentions, sagetv_0.txt will be the most recent log, not sagetv_1.txt.

That was taken from sagetv_0.txt, since I just copied a piece of the log I just renamed it to _1.txt. I have been kind of busy the past couple of days but tonight I will start fresh with a clean .properties file and no customizations and get the log from it. The customizations I currently have loaded are the webserver, mobile web interface, SRE, sleeptimer, metadata writer/reader, comskip plugin.

Ok here is the log file without any customizations. I initiated a manual update(by disabling and enabling a channel) on 1/28 @ 12:19am and 12:32am. The guide didn't start updating either time. I can normally tell when it updating because my my sprint software will start counting the data used. After the 2nd try at 12:32 I stopped and restarted the service.

Thanks,

Miller

Essentially, you're running into a situation where the EPG update has failed so many times, that SageTV is waiting longer than you are waiting before trying again.

SageTV asked me to ask you to submit a bug report if you want to try an update that could take care of that.

Support was able to get this resolved and they said the fix should be in the next release.
