Really need help with new WHS install

Relative newbie needing help: I built a new whs rig (gigabyte ma78gpm-ds2h mobo/amd 4850e cpu, 2 gigs corsair ram, 2 x 1 tb in pool and 1.5 tb outside pool for sage recordings), installed whs, hauppauge 150 pci card and drivers from their website, realtek hd audio drivers, directx, java 1.6.11, intervideo & nvidia decoders. I have directv and will use serial control to change channels.

i loaded sage via the console, and for the last 3 days when i get to the source setup page have had exception error (-5,0x80040256). From the forum learned that i had to reinstall the audio driver, which i did.

Today i can get past the tuner selection window with no exception error but the setup wizard stalls out when i pick "use external cable or satellite receiver to tune...". I cant get beyond this point, as the wizard just seems to stop.

Can anyone provide advise? many thanks.

I don't use STBs on my WHS server but I would add the the 1.5T drive to the pool and format to 64K clusters rather than having the drive out of the pool, personally. That won't help you with your STB/tuner issue but it would help once you get that figured out. I'm sure someone will be able to help. They might ask you to enable the debug log:

Do you have clients you are going to use with the WHS server? I wouldn't recommend WHS as the server and the client. If you have a client try running the setup configuration from it. Other than that make sure you install all the security patches and Power Pack 1 for WHS. Are you installing the Sage 6.5.6 beta or the 6.4.8 Production release?

I agree with Gerry on this one. I had a terrible time setting up my Sage/WHS server in client mode. DirectX and decoders gave me fits with WHS. I finally pulled my head out and setup via my extender and everything fell into place.

I'll 3rd against running a client on the WHS box. WHS truly is not meant to do what a client will ask of it. Driver/codec issues will pop up and haunt you at every turn. I can't even get my WHS box to preview a channel when I'm setting up a tuner. But, it records and serves up media just fine to the client PC.

thanks for the input so far. I have an MVP extender that i will use - don't plan to use a pc client.

Question - does the MVP need to be on while running the installation wizard? I'm running the wizard via remote desktop - should i run it from the tv connected to the MVP?

Second question - once this is setup, if i have mpeg2 files on other computers, can i just import them into the non-pooled drive dedicated to sage recordings on the WHS rig via my wired network?

Regarding bringing the Sage drive into the pool after formating in 64k blocks, is that as easy as adding it to the pool in the WHS console?

sorry forgot to add - am running whs with Power Pack 1 and am trying to install the 6.4.8 production release.

If that was the case, S_M_E wouldn't have needed to write the guide in his signature. But, it's not much more difficult, either... just a few more steps.

To add your recording drive to the pool, first move the files from the drive to the pool or another computer so you don't lose the recordings already there. Then add the drive to the pool and convert it to 64K clusters. Then follow the rest of my tutorial to convert your other drives until everything except C and D are converted. It's that easy. Technically you should be able to convert C and D too, if you wanted, but I wouldn't and I've never tested it.

Not sure if this well help or not but I wasn't able to load videos on my WHS server until I enabled the video acceleration.
Control Panel - Display - Settings Tab - Advanced - Troubleshoot Tab
Set Hardware acceleration to Full.

I'm planning on setting up a WHS server. I already have 3 drives formatted to 64K blocks used solely for Sage recordings and media rips. How do I add those to the pool?

TIA

Check out my tutorial. If you only have those three drives for the pool, you'll have to move the data off of at least the largest one (to a workstation for example) temporarily. If you have more drives than the three used drives you may not have to do that. WHS will format any drive added to the pool and any drive connected during install.

Just a quick post to close out my request: i dont know what happened, but my problems stopped as soon as i turned on my mvp. Once the extender fired up, I was able to complete the wizard, which had basically become unresponsive up to that point.

Not sure why it worked out this way (?), but sage on my whs is working now.
