import directory
I'm moving the hdd with my home vids on it to a different PC. I had hoped that Sage would allow me to 'browse' to the new directory to import the vids. Unfortunately, Sage doesn't appear to be that intuitive. When I go 'up' to the network level, I don't see a browse option so I have to type in the location of the new directory. The new location is clearly visible and across my network and I've copied to/from it from another PC.
I'm using this syntax: \\<new computer name>\<new hdd volume name>\<new directory name> But after almost a dozen different attempts, Sage keeps saying this directory doesn't exist and asks if I want to create a new one. I don't want to create a new one because this one does actually exist! How do I tell Sage where the new location of the vid files are located? thanx.

Are you running Sage as a service? If so, it cannot access network resources when logged in as LocalSystem. You must configure the service to log in as a username that has permission to access that network path.

Yes, I am running Sage as a service. It has accessed this home video hdd on a difference PC, over my wired network, for over a year now as a service.
Can you elaborate on this? "You must configure the service to log in as a username that has permission to access that network path" I have to alter XP on the server so that I have to login to it? thanx.

Whatever user account/password you log into your Sage Server with has to also exist on the "target" computer in order for Sage to pull in the videos from it. Your other computer must have had the same username and password as your Sage server which is why it worked. Your new pc must not. Example is that on your Sage Server you have the username and password as Sage/welcome2009. On the other pc then you must also have a username and password as Sage/welcome2009. You also need to tell Sage to use this username and password combination within the service.
The other option is to stop using Sage in Service Mode, instead just have the software running on the server and then these username/passoword issues disappear (and yes you can still have clients connect to your Sage server if not using it in Service Mode).

My sage server has never had a log in. It boots directly to the desktop. The old PC that had the home vids hdd did have a password to log in. The new PC with the home vids does not <yet> have a login - it too boots directly to the Windows desktop.
It seems odd that now, all of a sudden, I have to create a login requirement for the server...when the PC w/ the hdd I want to import has no login requirement...

Bring up the SageTV Service Control applet and look at the "Run Service As User" option. Do you have it set to LocalSystem or to something else? (Probably something else if you've successfully used network imports in the past.)
Does the user name listed there exist on your new file server? Does that user have permission to access the shared folders? It's not a question of whether you log in to Windows manually when you boot up. It's how the service logs in (and it must log in as somebody), and whether that user has the necessary permissions.

I don't fully understand the XP computer naming protocol but that's where I believe I messed up - the naming syntax for creating a new directory when using Sage's directory import feature (again, not the most intuitive). When I look at what windows calls my new computer (based on what I named it when installing XP) in My Network Places, it is called Q9550 (Antec-q9550). When trying to create the import directory in sage, I was typing \\Q9550\music when I should have been typing \\antec-q9550\music. This worked. On the server, sage logs in as <my first name>, <password> in services under computer mgmt. On this new PC where the media files are stored, I log in as <my first name my last name>, <same password>. The difference in username apparently doesn't matter. Thanx.

Make sure in your My Network Places enable the address bar. As you browse the network drive it should show you your exact path in the format you need. (\\antec-q9550\videos, etc.) For users in XP you have Name and Full Name. Name is considered your logon. In some dialogs you may actually see your Full name. If you don't supply a full name when you create the user it just duplicates Name as Full Name. I always create the user the same way on each machine for clarity.

This and Details view are among the settings I always turn on by reflex whenever I set up a new Windows machine, so I tend to forget that many people don't use them.

Actually, the Display Full Path in the Address Bar box was already checked. What I meant to ask about is how to show the full path in the title bar and now I've checked it and the full UNC path shows. Thanx!
