Absolutely horrid performance with vista compared to XP(laggin)
So I have narrowed down my lagging issues on my network. Here is what I have for configuration
Xp home server (3 PVR 150's and hdhomerun) XP pro client (2.0ghz opteron, 1.5gig ram, 7800gt) Vista home premium client (4850e, 2gb ram, 780g) The entire network is gigabit so its not a network issue. The hardware for the vista machine should be more than adequate. I was able to narrow down that the XP machines can work with sage fine, browsing through the menu is fine, tuning into channels is fine, and opening video files all ok. The vista machine, hell that takes at least 5-10 seconds to open a video file, open a recording, or even longer for playing a music file. I really want to get this resolved and I am at my wits end. I have tried switching overlay, VMR9, and EVR with no resolve. Disabled DXVA with no avail, disabled superfetch, disabled ready boost, did the network utilization issue. Don't have sageMC installed. So I really have tried a lot of the issues to resolve this with nothing solving my issues. I have submitted a bug report to sage about a week ago and got a response getting a a request for a log file but I haven't heard from sage in over a week. I will post a video of the lagging between menus and loading video files to show the issue that I am running into. |

Don't know if this applies to your set up,
but my XP computer does not want to network with the Vista computers, unless the XP is on the same User Group as the Vista's and I have set up the "shared file" property rights (permissions) to include "everyone". |

You did not mention user account control. Is UAC disabled? Have you looked at the performace tab in task manager to see what the network utilization is? While there, check to make sure the connection says gigabit. Just because all the components are gigabit does not mean they connect at that speed. Have you shut off all the Vista Media Center services? Lastly, try temporarily disabling all firewalls and virus software on the Vista client.

Is this the Gigabyte mATX 780G board?. Do you have the latest BIOS? Do you have an NVIDIA card you can test with? I have no empirical evidence, but my wife's client was a PITA (but I don't remember any delay like you describe) until I updated the BIOS and threw an NVIDIA card in (and wiping the Catylist drivers out). Now it runs fine on Vista32.

I had horrible lag in Vista even with gigabit. After googling around, I tried to go to Device Manager, and go to the Network Adapter properties, and under one of tabs with a list of features, I changed the speed from Auto to Full Duplex (1000) and that fixed the network lag.
I think Vista SP1 was supposed to fix this, are you using SP1?

Use some of the Gamer tweaks for Vista... especially turn off the SuperFetch...

You should also look at the NetworkThrottlingIndex, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948066

they updated that service big time in sp1, but the update didn't help much.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile] "SystemResponsiveness"=dword:00000014 "NetworkThrottlingIndex"=dword:ffffffff

Jumbo frames wreaks havoc if *everything* doesn't support it...good call.

How did you disable the jumbo frames? Is it via the registry fix above or some other means? I am having a similar issue on my client PC (HD playback stutters like crazy) and hoping to fix soon.

In Device Manager, Right click ethernet adapter, Select properties, Select "Advanced tab". Select "Jumbo Frames" under "Property" menu and set "Disabled" under "Values" menu.

And just so I'm clear, do I need to change that on all of my Vista Sage clients AND on my Sage Server?

Hmm I'm not convinced that's the answer then as both my clients and my server have been running Vista SP1. I'll tinker with it nonetheless and see what happens.

My Vista SP1 client has "Jumbo Frames" disabled as the default. So you may have a different problem.

Jumbo frames will be disabled by default. Even though your NIC can do jumbo frames you need a switch that supports. Not all swotches support the jumbo frame. If your switch doesn't support it you'll have issues if you enable it.

I just installed the latest 6.5.6 beta and things seem to be working great. Not sure what the exact fix was but I definitely recommend trying it out.
