Is this really BETA software?

After reviewing the forums here, I'm convinced we are evaluating more of an Alpha version than a Beta version. Every Beta I've sent to QA or evaluated had full functionality and was going to be tested in different environments to see if any issues crop up. This Beta lacks many features of the v1 release and IMHO is not ready for a large scale test.

Your talking about a Release Candidate. Even Microsoft beta versions of their software have major and minor changes to their OS's during this phase. I can recall in particular, during the beta testing of Windows 2000, there was a DVD player included along side of Media player. That feature got taken out before the Release Candidate stage. This is the same senario. This is also why the Beta is currently closed to the unregistered public.
For your knowledge, I am currently running the latest beta 2.0.13 with dual tuners PVR 250, 350 and Hardware output with overlay and local decoding turned off. I have no stability issues and recordings work perfectly etc..... As far as I am concerned, there are relatively few bugs, compared to the complexity of this product.

I don't know. I mean, I hate to beat a dead horse since we have already had at least one agonizingly unproductive thread on this very topic, but I think that in the strictest definition of the release phases, this doesn't quite measure up to the name Beta. There is just too much functionality missing and the interface is in too much flux. HOWEVER, I don't give a rat's, well you know what part of the rodents anatomy I was about to refer to, what it is called. I'm thrilled to have it in my hands and feel like I am not only seeing what is going on but actively participating in the push to finish it up. I love it. I love seeing the new releases, the bug fixes, the new features and, most of all, I love finding and reporting the bugs. I really don't know why this keeps coming up. Beta/Alpha, tomato/tomato (that really works better verbally). You know what I mean.

If Frey completely disappeared today, I would happily continue using .13. It's stable and it works.

Well I'd hope we get the delete issue fixed first

I'd agree that Frey is releasing this product the smart way in little steps. It allows them to get any issues fixed and then do another beta release and go after those issues/bugs and then put some more features in and release, etc... It's like we are part of their extended "in-house" testing team which I rather like!

You're willing to give up the VCR-type interface when playing back??? Right now, I'm playing my recorded videos back through PowerDVD for the most part. If I want to pause/rewind/ff, I'm SOL as it is now.

I have to assume you are talking about mouse controls since all that functionality is there. If so, that was clearly stated in the initial beta release notes as an open item. You should still be using 1.4.

If you are not talking about mouse controls, please explain further.

As mlbdude says, the missing controls mentioned are all mouse related. You can have full control via the keyboard or remote.

Who uses a mouse anymore? How crude

I finally have one remote that runs absolutely everything. v13 and one remote have completely replaced everything a/v in my life. Other than the most recent lockup

Alpha ..... Beta ..... Shmeta, who cares? These terms have no formal definition I am aware of and is a matter of semantics. Want to call it alpha? Fine.

Sometimes what a Company (i.e. MS) calls "gold" code I think is really alpha, but that's my opinion.
