Underpower server?

I can run placeshifter just fine over my LAN, but if I login from outside my network placeshifter is so painfully slow I can't even type in my login details.

I think this is because the SageTV Sever can't handle the transcoding duties, the specs are:

Windows 2000 Server SP4
SageTV Service Mode V6.4.8.184
Java V1.6.0_05
2Ghz Intel p4
1.5Gigs of Ram

Does anyone see an obvious flaw here?

That ought to be fast enough actually. So the login screen on the placeshifter is especially slow. The scrolling through the guide and the recordings menu is also slow, but isn't quite as bad. When you finally get to the recordings screen and try to play something back does it work? What's your upload speed of your internet connection?

A closer look

At the university where I work, over the campus wifi I can connect to my Sage Server, but I can't type in my login details, the connection is _that_ bad, and from the starbucks down the hill I can't see the server.
From home everything works fine, even if I force placeshifter to transcode the server only runs at 40-60% cpu usage.

So....

maybe the University is trying to block me, although why the port would be open at all, in that case, is beyond me.

Try manually setting the encoding parameters to something low (like 200 kbps), and see if you can establish a connection that way. I've NEVER had much sucess with the Dynamic Streamin System (it may connect, but then video looks like crap, or the video blurs/deblurs during the playback).

If you get a connection, try logging out, bumping up the setting and logging in again. I've got a 512 kbps upload speed (according to http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1), but I get decent playback when I manually set my Placeshifter speed to 300 kbps.

That's not going to help the OP. He can't even get past the login screen. The encoding parameters don't come into play until you start playing something back.

Greg-

I'm not sure there's anything you can do. I think you could try changing the port, but I doubt that's the issue. What's the speed of your internet connection?

Also, Sage v6.5 will have some new optimizations for the Placeshifter that should improve things. Its in beta right now, but it looks like its in rough shape so I wouldn't recommend trying it quite yet.

I don't believe that to be true, because the login screen is rendered on the server as well as the rest of the GUI; i had similar issues with attempting to login remotely until I started manually specifying connection parameters. I basically couldn't do anything with the DSS settings.

But, I will agree that the key is the OP's upload speed; if that's too low (such as one of the basic DSL packages with 384K), he may be out of luck.

Did you try to check off 3D acceleration and/or post-processing. That always kills my placeshifter connection.

Good luck!
