I used VMR9 Before EVR was available in SageTV, and I would get dropped frames with about the same frequency. I'm not sure that either is more tolerable than the other.
At the risk of jinxing myself, I might have finally fixed my stutter problem last night. Whenever I install new drivers I always immediately crank the "noise reduction" setting in the Nvidia control panel up to 55%. I think for my ATI cards I would crank it all the way up. This was to pass the SD HQV benchmark DVD noise reduction test. To be honest, I don't think you need it as high as 55% on an Nvidia card to pass that test anyway.

Well I finally stumbled upon a suggestion to set both the "edge enhancement" and "noise reduction" to somewhere in the range of 15-25% to eliminate stutter problems with HD content. So last night I increased my family room PC's 8600GT edge enhancement from 0 to 20 and reduced noise reduction from 55 to 20. Things got much worse! 1080i and 720p both stuttered like mad. Then I set edge reduction back to 0, and voila, no stutter!

Like I said, I might be declaring victory a little prematurely, but maybe it's worth a try if you're having similar problems. I didn't see a single stutter for the remaining 1.5 hours the TV was on after making the change. I didn't try the same on my ATI 2600XT card in my office, but I suspect it would help. It makes sense, the higher these settings the more work the video card has to do.

Just to summarize, my new "stutter free" (knock on wood) settings are 0 for edge enhancement and 20 for noise reduction. I didn't have time to check the HQV benchmark after making the change, but I don't think I really care about the benchmark if it fixes my HD.

I believe my edge enhancement is disabled so essentially 0, so don't know if that'll help any although I'll look at the noise reduction thing I don't remember what value that was.

Okay Installed JRE 6 Update 11, and Sage won't open at all! That sure helped! So I'll be uninstalling that. Anybody using Update 11 fine? I'm using Vista 32bit Ultimate, so specifically is anyone with Vista 32bit and Update 11 of JRE working fine or is this only me? I'm running in Service Mode.

So specifically:
Vista 32bit, Sage 6.5.1 Service Mode, JRE 6 Update 11: Anyone has this setup working?

Also when I look in Windows Task Manager under services, I see the SageTVservice.exe come and go. 1 sec its there next its gone. Somethings wrong!

I run sageclient on vista ult 32 and it's running perfect with update 11.

My server running 2003 is doing fine on update 11 also.

service mode is for the "recording" side of SageTV if you have it configured that way. Out of the box, sage is NOT in service mode. Go to the start menu and look for sagetv. in that section, there should be a manager of sorts. start that up and see how you have sageTV configured (or how it thinks you do).

Well I couldn't run the manager either to disable service mode (if that was the problem), so I had to uninstall. Now I'm running JRE update 7, I think update 11 overwrote update 10 because I couldn't see it even though I had update 10 installed.

So now everything is fine again with update 7, I'll try reinstalling update 11.

When I installed 11 everything broke (I allowed the java updater do the job). What finally fixed it for me was uninstalling 11, downloading 11 from www.java.com using IE and then installing it. After that everything was good again..

Mine worked fine thru java update. I also noticed this is the first time java actually uninstalled the previous version. After the install v10 was no longer installed. (This was on a client.)

last time when I downloaded through Firefox that little file and executed it then it kept saying that it can't get a connection, so I had to download the JRE update 11 myself (manual) and install it.

Now I tried to do what toricred did but came to find out that for some reason internet isn't working on IE (my default is Firefox) maybe that is why Java thing couldn't connect. Now I made the update through the Java Updater (b4 I couldn't find it ) and now it is working. Weird problems, I will never understand how computers work!

Oh well at least it is working now! Will test more to see if I notice any improvements, and I have to upgrade to 6.5.3 first

Just a somewhat brief on my progress.

Ok, there is no doubt that there is some difference in how the SageTV player renders compared to say Media Player Classic. Maybe its because of the need for more tweaking of the EVR code, or whatever I'm not in the position to make a call like that. But it is likely something that a faster video card could make up for, at least in my testing.

The system I'm currently running is a Phenom 8650 on a Geforce 8300 based mainboard using the PowerDVD 8 codec. As you can see in previous posts I had similar issues that Hellsingfan had, including the fact that other players played the video a little better. What I've found is that at least in my case, it was smoother, but not necessarily better. When I played in in SageTV Player, it seemed like the video was having 3:2 pulldown or interlacing issues which was very noticeable on scrolls or panning shots. I think in reality it was the player dropping frames to keep sync. Other players played smooth, but you would get a momentary pause every couple of minutes which is so slight you might mistake it as a OTA glitch.

Anyhow, to short it up a bit, I used a spare 8500GT that I had for my previous system and enabled Hybrid SLI and now the 3:2 pulldown issue is gone in SageTV player, as well as the pause in other players. I even stuck a 9600GT (without Hybrid SLI) in it just to make sure it wasn't a fluke and it was gone there as well. It does not matter if the 8300 is supposed to be good enough for HD content, its close but no cigar on the SageTV player. As for why? I have no way of making that call, but it is something to consider if you are having similar problems.
