6.5.1 on XP... video in ActiveMovie pop-up window

I recently wiped my laptop and did a clean install of XP SP3 and Sage client 6.5.1. I'm having major video renderer problems:

1. Overlay mode does not work (video portion cannot be displayed error)
2. VMR9 mode causes video to display in a pop-up ActiveMovie window (WTF?!?)
3. EVR mode works, but hogs too much CPU and is choppy

I want to get VMR9 working again (worked fine in 6.4.X)... how do I disable this damned ActiveMovie window?

Had that Activemovie thing happen to me once. I think I had to revert to a restore point to fix the issue though. Obviously not an option on a clean install.

I updated to XP SP3 and did all the Hi Priority updates before doing a clean install of 6.5.1 also. One of the Microsoft recommended updates was a new 178.xx or 179.xx nVidia driver. My video has fallen apart since then.

I had the older version driver (175.19) and did a reinstall of that driver earlier tonight. That put everything back to where it was and working again - smooth playback without artifacts.

If your card is nVidia, see if you can find a driver from August or Sepember. The last two have given me nothing but grief.

EDIT: Ditto to your observation; "EVR mode works, but hogs too much CPU and is choppy"

My laptop has an ATI 9600 Mobile ProTurbo video card with the latest (Catalyst 8.11) drivers. System is clean with the exception of all Microsoft Updates, SageTV client, and Java.
