Can I easily download the guide from work?

I just use the built-in EPG service for the USA channels. I lost internet access at my house and it may be down for some weeks more. My guide is now just filled with "No Data". Is it possible to download the guide data when I am at work and then transfer it to my Sage box? Or would I be better off just setting up a different EPG service and then trying to do the transfer?

thanks

Only way to download guide data is to use the SageTV software. Problem with that is, even if you had a spare license to install Sage at work, you'd have to copy your wiz.bin from home, take it to work, download the data, then take the wiz.bin home, and replace it. But then you'd lose anything that happened during the day.

Probably easier to temporarilly use something like XMLTV, which you could run at work and then just bring the XML file home.

you could try and get a temporary "dial-up" (ugh) account until your get permanent internet access again.

Yea... that is about what I was expecting to hear. Thanks for the information.

I can't use dialup since I ditched the landline many years ago and never looked back.... well, not until today.

I can look into setting up XMLTV and seeing if I can get that to work.

I can just pick up a wireless signal in one extreme corner of my house via my laptop. I was thinking that I could pick it up on the laptop and then activate internet connection sharing and then put the laptop on my LAN via ethernet, and let my server download the guide through it. However, once it is on the LAN, it stops trying to use the wireless for the internet and searches the LAN for internet access (which doesn't exist). I even made sure that I erased the gateway for the LAN thinking that would force it to use the wireless, but I can't get it to go.

In the old Win98 days, you could tell it to use connection X for the internet, but that seems to be gone now and I can't find a way to set the wireless connection "merit" function higher than the LAN. People have suggested rewriting the routing tables, but that is out of my comfort zone....

---------------------------------

Well, I couldn't figure out how to share the wireless of the laptop to my LAN. I could find lots of questions from people wanting to do it, but no solid answers on how to do it. I ended up just buying a WiFi access point and using it to build a wireless brige to the hot spot. Worked great and now I have the guide again!
