Can STV capture from cam hooked up via firewire?

I just had a thought about this while at work, and a search only yielded me an 80+ page post about STBs with firewire and without wanting to go through all 80 pages, I figured I'd just ask the experts.

I currently capture my video(from miniDV) using Ulead Video Studio 11 which puts the file in an avi container. I'd love to have sagetv read it and cap it into it's mpeg-ts which I could do alot more with.

Is this something I can do with STV??

So this got moved into Hardware? Why would this be hardware?

Does SageTV support this or not for capturing video?

You're asking if SageTV supports certain hardware, your camera, so I say it is a hardware related question.

Why don't you just plug it in and find out? Plug it in, go into tuner setup and see if it shows up.

And I'm not sure how mpeg would let you "do alot more with." DV-AVI is a lot more flexible for editing.

Lastly, you can plug the camera's output via S-Video or composite to an analog tuner's input, and capture it directly to MPEG2 if that is what you want.

Well I will plug it up to test it out eventually, but I figured someone could answer me immediately as this would seem like a simple thing. It has nothing to do with "my camera". It's a general question of whether sagetv will capture from a firewire port as my cam has no drivers or anything for sagetv to support.

Just as Ulead will see that a camera is hooked to a firewire port and let it pull in video with no specific support for any cam, I would hope sage could do the same if it can cap video on it with cable boxes with firewire outs(and from the posts devoted to it, I'm guessing it can). But obviously i'm no expert which is why I asked the question.

So why would I comment that it could "do alot more with it"?
My want is that after making a dvd out of the video, I'd like to convert the avi to mp4/mkv for permanent storage on my server, and my current process of using Handbrake and other tools does not accept DV-AVI from my experiences. But I can do pretty much do anything encoding wise with the mpg files. Plus those DV-AVI files are huge, which is why I want to encode it to mp4 or something.

So having it in mpg would be sweet as it would open up many encoding doors.

And currently, I am using the HDhomerun. Therefore, no analog inputs for me to use without another hardware purchase.
