How does Sage utilize multiple hard drives/partitions/directories?

Just curious on how Sage uses available storage. I have 2 160GB drives in my HTPC - a small C:\ partition for OS/apps (10GB), a 160GB D:\ drive, and a 150GB E:\. I have setup 'TV Recording' directories on the D & E drives and pointed to both directories in Sage. When I check system properties under the Sage setup menu, it shows roughly 310GB available for storage.

Does Sage fill one directory first? Allocate randomly across both? I have recordings in both the E:\ partition and D:\ partition currently.

Inquiring minds want to know....for no real reason other than to solve my own curiosity!

Thanks!

Jason

My experience is the directory listed first gets filled up first and then the second starts to get filled up. After filling both, then SageTV starts managing the space by deleting files based upon whether they were manual, favorites, etc.

One other suggestion I would have, is to create video folders on each drives root directory and place your recordings in those and also have separate library folders on one or both of the root directories.

With your current method, (the recorded video's being directly on the root directory) I don't think SageTV will allow you to create a library folder on the root directory, because the library folder can't be a subdirectory of the video directories.

So, if I want to create libraries (which I don't have right now), they would have to be parallel directories rather than subdirectories?

For example:

E:\TV Recordings (for recorded shows - this is what I have now)
E:\Video Libary (if I wanted a library)

Or, would the library need to be a sub of the 'TV Recordings' directory?

Regarding disk use, I assumed one would fill than the other - that's why I was curious when I noticed it seemed to randomly bounce back and forth between directories/drives. Come to think of it, I think both my D and E drives have about the same amount of utilization/free-space - is Sage trying to equalize disk space usage?

I have 4 video directories on 4 partitions over 2 drives... SageTV seems to record to the one with the most space free at the time of a recording. This seems to keep the amount of free space evened out over the 4 partitions, since when one gets less free space than another, it is no longer the one used for the next recording.

I'm not sure if that is really the way it works or if I'm just not noticing things correctly...

What I have been experiencing with SageTV 2.0 is that it tries to keep each video directory "equally full." By that I mean that I have two 80 GB drives and it seens to maintain the same amount of free space on each. I have about 15 GB of data used on the second drive and it will start recording programs on it when there is about 15 GB of data recorded to the first one. I can't say for sure if this was the case with 1.4

To me, v2 & v1.4 seem to operate the same in this regard -- keep the drives equally full.

It's simple. Which ever drive has the most free space at the start of the recording is the drive it uses. I've noticed this because I played with it to see how it did it and I used drives of different sizes. I used a 250 and an 80. The 80 was listed first and the 250 second. The 250 got used until the 80 had more free space then it went back and forth between the two.

Yes, they would need to be "parallel" directories, not subdirectories.

Your example would be fine.
