Occational corrupted video files

I've been having a problem that my mpeg2 two files, captured by my Hauppauge 500 card get corrupted. I also find that I get slow-down on my server between 9 and 11pm every so often.

I have a theory that it is the Microsoft Background Intelligent Transfer service that hogs 100% CPU for a couple of minutes while it download the Microsoft updates.

My machine is full patched to SP3 and is running XP Pro.

Anybody else noticed this and has a fix other than stopping this and the Auto Updater service?

Funny how it always picks my wife's recording to corrupt!

Yes, it certainly could be somthing hogging up resources, but it could also be the common issue as described in link:

sorry ben thats not whats causing the issue for me. I too have similar issues I never thought it to be auto update but I may give it a try. Its getting to be a major annoyance especially since one has purchased multiple licenses to gain a certain experience here and to find problems of this nature that seem to have no real solution I've been experiencing similar issues since after 6.3.10 and up

I thought it was the registry thing as well but now I'm not so sure. I found the smoking gun last night. I found that although my PC is set up to install Updates at 3.00am, the BITS is downloading them between 9.00 and 10.30pm. This coinsided with the corruption of the recording. The file plays up OK up until the point where the transfer began but then the file playback iether goes back to the beginning (without resseting the progress time line) or plays at two or three times speed. I get exectly the same behavior irrispective of what player I use.

I also had a problem with the Real Player update casuing go slows, so I guess that may have been the same thing.

I'm going to turn off the Update and BIT servises and set a calendar reminder on the 14th of each month and do the update manually.

I'm also goingto look into the BITS CPU hogging problem.

Auto updates for windows should not be setup on a Sage server IMO. Why? Because I don't trust Microsoft to create an update that won't hose up my server. We have seen too many "updates" that actually were a step back and has caused problems. I would rather test out all the updates on my pc's and if everything seems okay, do a manual update.

Obviously that isn't the reason it is causing problems in this case, but this is just one more reason NOT to use auto update on a Sage server.
