AVI error (-4,0x80004005)

I'm trying to play back AVI files through my SageTV software (not placeshifter) and get the following message:

There was a Playback Error in playback. Details: sage.PlaybackException: Error (-4,0x80004005): There was a problem rendering the video portion of the content for playback.

The properties of the file (and all my other AVI files which I've tested won't play) show:

Format: AVI[DVVIDEO/28.7Mbps 15:11 480p@29.97fps, PCM_S16LE/1536Kbps@48kHz Stereo]

I'm using 2 AverMediaM780 and 1 Hauppauge HD PVR on a Vista Ultimate machine. I've read some of the suggestions in this forum that say I should be using SageTV as the decoders so I've set it that way. I have no problems playing H.264 files recorded from my camcorder.

Unfortunately, although I know enough about this stuff to think it might have something to do with assigning the correct codecs or decoder to play my AVI files (I was able to fix a similar problem with MP3 files based on someone's suggestions in this forum), I probably need more guidance than others.

It turns out that Windows Movie Maker creates DV-AVI files with an AVI extension. SageTV Support told me that file format is not supported. When I converted these to AVI format, it played fine.

I don't have the HD100 so I don't know if that one worked as well but the HD200 plays DV-AVI.
