The Daily Show's TiVo-Beta rig and more

Via BoingBoing, I bring you this fascinating comment thread from the PVR blog that discusses the Daily Show's archaic and time-consuming TiVo rig--they actually transcode to Beta and walk the tapes over to editing!

http://www.pvrblog.com/pvr/2008/08/t...178#c126775112

I'm not a big Snapstream fan, but at the end of this comment stream, there's a link to a very cool Snapstream search feature that I wouldn't mind having available in Sage.

BTW, the ability to record the Daily Show is about 75% of the reason I have a PVR in the first place!

What feature is that? I think SageTV does most of what the comment is referring to (at least for the consumer market)

What that poster is referring to (the poster is Rakesh CEO of Snapstream) is their Enterprise product which Snapstream sells to companies wanting a high-powered tv recording device to monitor media etc. They sell it as an appliance to politicians, tv shows, business groups, etc. It's the future of Snapstream in my opinion and was a great move by them to capture an under-served market with software they already had.

I actually was the one to tip Rakesh off on that blog post at PVRWire before he made that comment.

Wow, that's really interesting stuff.

Here's the link to the snapstream demo...

Yep. If you could just get captions captured reliably in Sage then indexing them and providing a search, skip to, notify etc engine probably wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

Good on em I reckon. I wonder if they're considering DVB support for this new market?

Mick.

Brent, the feature I was referring to is the ability to index and search closed captioning text. Why constrain that to the enterprise market? I can think of lots of cool things I could do with that feature, even with only one capture card! I played around with making some Daily Show style clips for a college class once--it was ridiculously hard, glad to see Snapstream is working on a solution.

I assume "undeserved" was just a typo?

Yep. I guess that could be a Freudian slip though. No it should be under-served. Correcting the typing error now...
