TV streaming "crashes" after idling for a few hours

I have installed SageTV on my Windows Home Server. The HomeServer add-in let's me restart the SageTV service with ease, thanks for that.

So I use Placeshifter on my clients. And it's brilliant!

But if I quit PlaceShifter, wait a few hours, and try to watch live TV again I get an error saying that "there was an error connecting to my TV card" (a Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2) and that I should install the latest driver and verify that they work...

I installed the absolute latest drivers I could find (from august 18, 2008) and they do work with SageTV. It helps to restart the service, but I'd rather like a permanent fix.

Any thoughts?

Try running Sage on the WHS server. It will come up as a client. Then go through the configuration wizard there. Ignore and go past any video and audio errors and just keep going even if you get no video until you finish the configuration. Then try Placeshifter from another machine.

I get the same error on the client, and no picture without restarting the service.

However, I noticed something. In the setup I specified that SageTV (the client?) should not start up. I figured that would be OK since the SageTV service is supposed to be running... right?

Correct. The other thing to try is to make sure you do have the latest drivers. shspvr.com in their forums can help. Also there is a program that comes with the CD or the drivers called hwclear. Running that removes all references to your drivers inclusing the registry. Run that, reboot and then install the latest. Instructions can also be found at shspvr.com in the forums. Make sure the USB tuner is plugged into a port on the PC and not a hub and try a different port.

Yes, I've tried every driver I have access to and I'm now running the latest (and I always use the hwclear program between driver tests). I'm not running through an external USB-hub, but I've got a feeling that the USB-connection on the side of the cabinet is really a USB hub...

I'll see what happens if I change ports.

I removed the drivers completely (using hwclear.exe), turned my server off, changed the USB-port (now it's directly connected to the mother board), powered on and installed the newest driver again.

No luck. After SageTV being idle for a few hours, I get the same error like before (see post nr 2).

I've been experiencing a similar problem with my Hauppauge WinTV-PVR USB2.

It sounds like you've fixed it?

I have a camera outside my door connected so that when somebody press the door bell, I get their picture. Before I installed SageTV, I had the camera hooked up to my Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 using WebcamXP. It ran for two weeks without one single problem...

Have you gone into device manager and ensured that the devices or usb ports are not set to save save power under the power management tab ?

Yes.

It's the first thing I checked. This looks almost like the Hauppauge is restarting itself for some reason...

You know the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray? I have only one device in that list and it's my Hauppauge card. When I start my system the icon is placed as number 4-6 in the list (counting from the left).

I've noticed that when SageTV can't connect to the capture card, the Safely remove hardwware icon has been moved to the first position, just like I had unplugged the device and connected it again.
