Slow tuning with the SageTV Trial version

Hello,

I am currently trying to find an alternative to Vista Media Center for watching and recording TV, and videos, music. I have a Hauppage WinTV Nova-T 500 dual DVB-T tuner card. Yesterday I installed the trial version of SageTV and I got the following "total newbie " problems:

- channel tuning is very slow. When I select Live TV, or when I choose another channel, I must wait about 10 seconds before I get the picture and the sound.

- on some channels, there is sometimes no sound. On some other channels, it is always fine.

- the channels buttons on the MCE remote do not seem to work. I can switch channels with the P+ and P- buttons, or with the keyboard. Maybe a French keyboard problem, like in Mediaportal? I did not try pushing Caps Lock.

Have you ever seen these problems? Do you have any idea?

Thanks

I have some experience that may help.

I get the same 10 second channel changes. However, it is this slow only when using the Overlay video renderer. If you switch the video renderer to either the default or the VMR9 one, does it change channels quicker? If this does improve things, the next thing to worry about is whether or not the new renderer introduces video stuttering.

For the sound problem, do the digital channels have sound and the analog channels do not? If so, in the SageTV directory, there is a ac3setup command that you should run and it should fix that problem.

Hope this helps.

Hello bmac.to. Thanks for your help.
I did try to switch the Video renderer from Overlay to default or VMR9, but I did not see any noticeable change. Any other idea why tuning in any channel takes about 15 seconds?
I will try the audio part today.

Hmmm, 15 seconds is really long. Do you a software package that came with the tuner card? (software that does not do recording). For Hauppauge tuner cards, the software is called WinTV - in WinTV, channel changes are very fast for me (1-2 seconds). In SageTV, with the overlay renderer, the time is 6-10 seconds. With the VMR9 renderer, the time is 3-4 seconds. Sage will always be slower than WinTV because of the recording - it starts recording then displays the channel (I wish it did the opposite but it seems like all PVR software works this way).

This was something I researched on this forum quite a bit and I couldnt really find any other way to improve channel changing performance.

Hello,

The only driver I use is the latest Hauppage WinTV Nova-T 500 Vista driver. I have not install the Hauppage application.
This bug does not occur with the other TV applications like Vista Media Center.

By the way, the ac3filter setup did not help solving the sound issues in live TV (some channels) and videos (some files).

I had the same problem when I first installed Sage several months ago. The problem was that the Windows Media Center services were running. Try stopping and disabling all of the windows media center services and see if that fixes it.

Thank you, stopping the Vista Media Center Services solved my problem. Tuning is now slow (few seconds), but acceptable.
