Anybody have My Videos working properly?

This one is just killing my WAF. She wants me to bring back BTV because of Sage's inferior classification of videos and recorded shows.

I am using SageMC and I have 4 media import folders:

f:\sage videos\folder 1
f:\sage videos\folder 2
f:\sage videos\folder 3
f:\sage videos\folder 4

When I go look at My Videos in the default STV, I can fiddle with the settings (specifically removing the combined setting) and I get a nice hierarchy view. At the top level I see folder 1 - folder 4 as options and I can select one of them to go into to see the videos in that folder.

When I run SageMC and select My Videos, I get a list of all the videos in all 4 folders. There is no hierarchy. Even if I say View by Folder. Shouldn't View by Folder group them by the folder they are in?

Does anybody have this working properly?

Thanks
Greg (desperately trying to get Sage (for 8 months now) to a point where my wife likes it at least as much as BTV)

Here is what I mean. I have attached two images. The default STV and SageMC.

There sageMC version puts all of them in one directory and it also picks up 4 extra videos that I have no idea where they come from. I am guessing one of my recording directories.

The other strange thing is that I have 4 directories configured, but Sage itself is only picking up 2 of them and it is not even picking up all of the videos in the directories. The Kids Movies directory is listed as having 5 videos, but it really has about 20.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Greg

Have you tried just viewing by "Genre"? After retrieving meta data from IMDB for each movie, you can view all your videos by Genre and everything gets neatly organized into various categories. I have 300+ movies organized this way with no particular organization in terms of the actual file location.

Actually, I think you're looking for folder view. Clicking that first button that says "file system" should toggle view modes.

I have this working as you seem to expect with a folder displayed for each directory that contains multiple movies.

When you describe having four import folders;

f:\sage videos\folder 1
f:\sage videos\folder 2
f:\sage videos\folder 3
f:\sage videos\folder 4

Are the paths as you describe here? If they are I'd suggest reconfiguring so that you have only one pointing to 'f:\sage videos'. For each import folder that's added SageMC merges the content directly in that folder to the root of the my videos file system view.

If you actually have paths like;

c:\foo\wiggles
v:\uiop\SomeShow
c:\bah\DoctorWho

Then you still want to either change the config to point to;

c:\foo
v:\uiop
c:\bah

or add further sub directories for your shows;

c:\foo\wiggles\WigglesSeasonOne
v:\uiop\SomeShow\CoolShow
c:\bah\DoctorWho\Doctor Who 2K5 S1

In your post you mention "specifically removing the combined setting". I'm not aware of a similar setting in SageMC. If this setting does what it sounds like in the stock stv then this is likely the difference that you're seeing between the two.

Mick.

edit: I'm not sure about the reason you're not picking up the extra videos that are missing. Are they missing in both stv's?

Hi EP

I did expect that file system would give me the view I wanted. It does not.

Bug? Messed up Wiz.bin?

I have different folder names, but they are all located under f:\sage videos. I have 4 folders. (only 2 seemed to import videos - but that is another problem)

Are you saying that if I removed the 4 folders and replaced them with a single folder f:\sage videos, that it would work properly? If that is what you are saying, then the answer is, it doesn't work for me. I tried that first.

Any suggestions of which logs to look in to see if something is going wrong?

Thanks

Hey Greg,

Yep. Based on my experience that should work.

Stupid question: Are you running a 'Rescan Import Folders' by right clicking on the lhs menu in 'My Videos'?

Mick.

Edit:

In options I have 'settings/Sage MC/Main/Screen Specific Options/Video Library/Fullsize folder.jpg' set to 'Disabled'. The description of this option is 'Show an existing folder.jpg as full size cover art without the folder icon'. If you have this set to enabled I'd change it just in case. You never know...

Yes I did a rescan. I did both a "do it in the background" and do it in the foreground. The scan finishes real quick.

I am guessing that my wiz.bin is screwed. I am going to go search to see if I can start all over again yet still import all my recordings.

If I understand this you have given SageMC four different directories to import, something like this:

f:\sage\folder 1\
f:\sage\folder 2\
f:\sage\folder 3\
f:\sage\folder 4\

You have some movies like this:
f:\sage\folder 1\movie 1
f:\sage\folder 1\movie 2
f:\sage\folder 2\movie 3
f:\sage\folder 2\movie 4
f:\sage\folder 2\movie 5
f:\sage\folder 3\movie 6
f:\sage\folder 4\movie 7
f:\sage\folder 4\movie 8

What you are wanting to see in SageMC is something like this:

folder 1
folder 2
folder 3
folder 4

if you pick folder 2 then you want to see:
movie 3
movie 4
movie 5

Let me change the directory names to make my example a little more meaningful. Lets say we want to see a folder/movie structure like this in SageMC:

Kids Movies
containing Ice Age & Flushed Away

TV Series
containing Eureka, Top Gear & Rescue Me
Movies
containing Godfather, 2001 A Space Odyssey, 10,000 BC & 3:10 to Yuma
Wifes Movies
containing wmovie 1, wmovie 2 & wmovie 3

And that they are stored on your hard drive like this:
f:\sage\Kids Movies\Ice Age
f:\sage\Kids Movies\Flushed Away
f:\sage\TV Series\Eureka
f:\sage\TV Series\Top Gear
f:\sage\TV Series\Rescue Me
f:\sage\Movies\Godfather
f:\sage\Movies\2001 A Space Odyssey
f:\sage\Movies\10,000 BC
f:\sage\Movies\3:10 to Yuma
f:\sage\Wifes Movies\wmovie 1
f:\sage\Wifes Movies\wmovie 2
f:\sage\Wifes Movies\wmovie 3

When you point SageMC to import these directories:
f:\sage\Kids Movies
f:\sage\TV Series
f:\sage\Movies
f:\sage\Wifes Movies

SageMC does not keep the import directory as part of the tree (ie f:\sage\Kids Movies). So in this example SageMC will only display:

Ice Age
Flushed Away
Eureka
Top Gear
Rescue Me
Godfather
2001 A Space Odyssey
10,000 BC
3:10 to Yuma
wmovie 1
wmovie 2
wmovie 3

In this example there are several things you can do to get the desired result. One would be to deepen your directory structure such as:

f:\sage\Kids Movies\Kids Movies\Ice Age
f:\sage\Kids Movies\Kids Movies\Flushed Away
f:\sage\TV Series\TV Series\Eureka
f:\sage\TV Series\TV Series\Top Gear
f:\sage\TV Series\TV Series\Rescue Me
f:\sage\Movies\Movies\Godfather
f:\sage\Movies\Movies\2001 A Space Odyssey
f:\sage\Movies\Movies\10,000 BC
f:\sage\Movies\Movies\3:10 to Yuma
f:\sage\Wifes Movies\Wifes Movies\wmovie 1
f:\sage\Wifes Movies\Wifes Movies\wmovie 2
f:\sage\Wifes Movies\Wifes Movies\wmovie 3

Now when you setup your 4 import directories as:
f:\sage\Kids Movies
f:\sage\TV Series
f:\sage\Movies
f:\sage\Wifes Movies

SageMC will display:
a folder "Kids Movies"
containing Ice Age & Flushed Away

a folder "TV Series"
containing Eureka, Top Gear & Rescue Me

a folder "Movies"
containing Godfather, 2001 A Space Odyssey, 10,000 BC & 3:10 to Yuma

a folder "Wifes Movies"
containing wmovie 1, wmovie 2 & wmovie 3

This kind of a round-a-bout way to get to the desired result.
Assuming your directory structure is all on one drive as:
f:\sage\Kids Movies
f:\sage\TV Series
f:\sage\Movies
f:\sage\Wifes Movies
Then it would be easier to delete your 4 import points and just use one:
f:\sage\
Then SageMC would display correctly showing the 4 movie folders each containing the movies underneath.

This is part of a neat feature I just recently learned about. I have movies spread across 4 1TB drives. About 400 movies total. And I have four imports:
d:\movies
e:\movies
f:\movies
g:\movies

When I was ripping the movies I just did them in random order filling up one drive at a time. What I ended up with was something like this:
d:\movies\Star Trek 1
d:\movies\Star Trek 4
e:\movies\Star Trek 5
e:\movies\Star Trek 2
f:\movies\Star Trek 3
g:\movies\Star Trek 6

In SageMC it displays:
Star Trek 1
Star Trek 2
Star Trek 3
Star Trek 4
Star Trek 5
Star Trek 6

By going to each drive and creating a Star Trek directory under movies like this:
d:\movies\Star Trek\Star Trek 1
d:\movies\Star Trek\Star Trek 4

e:\movies\Star Trek\Star Trek 5
e:\movies\Star Trek\Star Trek 2

f:\movies\Star Trek\Star Trek 3

g:\movies\Star Trek\Star Trek 6

SageMC merges each Star Trek directory together. So now I get on screen in My Videos listing a folder icon labeled "Star Trek 6 items". Clicking it gives me the six movies:

Star Trek 1
Star Trek 2
Star Trek 3
Star Trek 4
Star Trek 5
Star Trek 6

I was dreading moving gigabytes of movies around from drive to drive to match them up. Now I don't have to. SageMC takes care of it.

As mentioned earier, the Folders displayed in the 'Folder View' are relative of the import folder location, so if your import folders are
f:\sage videos\folder 1
f:\sage videos\folder 2
f:\sage videos\folder 3
f:\sage videos\folder 4

then you will not see folder 1, etc, in the list. If instead you remove those import folders and use

f:\sage videos

then you should get folder 1, folder 2, folder 3, and folder 4 as top level options. If you aren't, I'm not sure what is going on.

Thanks Fuzzy,

I will try that out right now.

BTW, I did figure out why some of the videos were not showing up. Some of the videos had been imported as recorded shows. So any videos that were considered recorded shows did not show up in the My Videos. That makes sense.

You m ight wonder why I had some of the videos imported as recordings. I imported my BTV library and these were part of that library. I have deleted them from the recorded shows and they are now showing up.

Yea!!! that worked. It is still importing, but I can see the structure forming already.

Fuzzy, thank you very much for solving this problem for me.

I can feel the WAF increasing already.

It's too bad the folder view can't behave the same as the default stv.

I would like to use SageMC again, however this problem is stopping me...

If I can't get the same folder view between the default STV and SageMC, then it's a no go.

Can I ask why this wasn't made to behave in the same manor as the default STV?

Because we're non-conformists.

Honestly, I don't know how the default STV folder view works so I can't answer your question.

Well don't know if this would be an option for you, but you can seamlessly call the original default STV menu (and switch back to SageMC with 'Left' and 'Back') by adding the following to the sagemc_menu.xml:

Code:
        <internalScreenMenuItem screen="Default STV Menu" title="Videos">
        <evalExpression>AddStaticContext("VideoBrowserStyle", "xFolder")</evalExpression>
        <evalExpression>AddStaticContext("TargetMenuName", "Browser - Videos")</evalExpression>
        <evalExpression>AddStaticContext("LeftListener", "Back - Back, or up a folder level.")</evalExpression>
        <evalExpression>AddStaticContext("BackWidgetId", "BASE-62816")</evalExpression>
    </internalScreenMenuItem>

In the default stv my import folders are listed just as I had setup. In sageMC they are combines all into one. And the solution listed here is to create another level of folders. But then the default stv will show them wrong.

The goal in SageMC (I think) is to show DVD's and Videos the same way. So if you have a ripped DVD of "Star Wars" and a divx movie of "Return of the Jedi" they both will display the same on the My Videos page. This is by design albeit different than in the default STV.

Is this what you are talking about being a problem? This is how most would want to see it I think.

Why are you going back to the default STV when you are using SageMC?

I have a mediamvp for the folks that runs the stock stv.

It's ok, if this is not easily fixable.
