Happauge remote not working on Ubuntu

Hi there,

I am sort of a Linux noob, but I follow instructions well. Speaking of instructions, I went through the pdf for Ubuntu installation of SageTV Media Center / Client posted by Peggysis. All went according to plan, but my remote won't work.

Questions:

1) Do I have to install LIRC? Should I have done that PRIOR to the Sage install? None of the instructions demand it unless you are IR Blasting, which I am not.

2) Is there a way to see (in Linux) whether the signals are being received at all? I went into setup and tried to test using the link IR with commands menu, and none of the buttons were received.

Helpful hints appreciated.

I believe its a PVR-150, though I bought it a while ago and it might be a 250. Brain getting old. If you need to know I can take the chassis apart and look at it more closely.

I am psyched to use UBUNTU instead of M$ - but I can't seem to resolve this one.

So I took some pieces from this thread...

and when I run

mode2 -d /dev/lirc0

I can see the remote is working.

When I do a

sudo /etc/init.d/lirc start

I get no errors.

When I do

sudo lircd -n

in one terminal, things start up, but when I run irw, the errors are:

lircd: lircd(hauppauge) ready
lircd: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd: could not open /dev/lirc
lircd: default_init(): Is a directory
lircd: caught signal
Terminated

Hope this helps someone. I don't really know what I'm doing here, in case that's not obvious.

Glad my pdf helped you! I'll be sure to update it each time I upgrade (usually in January).

I'm sorry you are having trouble with lirc, but looks like you're not alone. I don't use a remote on my system (it's a server only), so I can't be of much help, but I did some research, and found a forum with some more recent posts:

My guess is that either lirc or Ubuntu (or both!) has changed enough so that you are experiencing an issue that did not exist before.

Hopefully, you will find your answer there, or maybe someone in that forum can help you out. It doesn't look like many people here have experience with it, but you never know. Keep checking. Good luck!

Maybe I should just roll back to the version of Ubuntu that you used. Are you on Gutsy? Did you install LIRC using APT from there or did you need nothing - just your steps sufficed?

FWIW - I don't use lirc for IR receiving, but I have had really decent success with it and server based channel changing when I pull from CVS and compile my own.
