Mpeg2 decoder needed w/Radeon?

Newbee question,

If a video card provides hardware DVD/mpeg decoding, like my Radeon 9600XT, do I still need decoding 'software' to take advantage of the video card's acceleration?

Also, how would one configure SageTV to use the hardware decoder of the video card?

I am considering the WinTV-250 or 350 but assume that the 250 would work just as well as the 350 if the video card offers hardware decoding.

Thanks,

Bill

The Radeon cards don't have true full decoding. However, when using a software decoder you can enable hardware decode assist (DXVA) to offload some of the process from your CPU.

Short answer, yes you must still use a software decoder.
