Question Can someone please explain to me how to use subcatagories for videos correctly?

Okay, I'm almost embarrassed for asking such a basic question. But, I never really needed to do this until now.

I finally started making video subcatagories to keep navigation of my videos easier. However, it's not working the way I expected.

One would think when you assign a catagory/subcatagory to a video, it would be available in a folder inside it's respective parent catagory folder. For example, I should be able to click on the the Music Videos icon under VIDEOS, then under that catagory I should see subcatagories such as "rock", "rap", "classic".

Instead, the subcatagory folder is mixed up with all my primary catagory folders.

What's the trick to get this to have a proper hierarchy?

I gave up on it and just use the filesystem view. I really wish you could build nested views using multiple fields, including the ability to group by season and show title for TV shows. That, plus multiple genres simultaneously would rock.

I may be dense, but does that mean that subcatagories under SageMC do absolutely nothing?

From what I can tell (and I use categories/subcategories very sparingly), the term subcategory is really a mismomer. It is really just a second category. For example, all my 007 movies have a category of action and a subcategory of 007, and thus they show up in both genre folders. But the 007 genre folder is not located under the action genre folder

Yup, that's right. The sub-category is more like a secondary category. It allows you to get a video to appear in more than one genre. I'm pretty sure this behavior is from BF (before flachbar ).

Aloha,
Mike

I just create multiple folders on the filesystem and use "folder" view from within Sage.

I use folder view but if you have offline movies that doesn't work too well....

Example:
\Action
Movie1
\ChickFlicks
Movie2
\Kids
Movie3
\Offline
Movie4 (This is really an action movie but it doesn't show up there.)

An offline movie would be any DVD movie that isn't online and ready to be viewed. For an offline movie, you have to insert the disk into the player before it will play.

Example.....
All kids movies are online (IE: This way the kids will not scratch/damage any of them.)
As far as the rest of the movies, we watch about 75% of them over and over and the other 25% we hardly ever watch again. So 75% are online and the other 25% are offline. I like to include the 25% in SageTV just so we have all of the movies listed to choose from.
