R5000 and Motorola STB

Well, I have finally received and setup my two R5000 modified StarChoice Motorola STB and I am simply amazed at the quality of the capture.

I do have a couple of questions:

1. How do you guys create two instances of the R5000 application, with all it's settings, to start automatically when the server re-starts for some reason ?

2. Those of you who are using the R5000 modified set top boxes, are you using the option to let the R5000 application turn on and turn off the STB, as provided for by the application's options ?

Thanks in advance.

The R5000 is a GREAT device. Makes cablecard under Vista look amateur hour. BTW, there is no "capturing" going on. It's just handing you the bits right off the satellite/cable network. No encoding, no processing, just the raw data the STB gets.

As for #1, I don't understand why you want two instances. That won't work in any case, but if you are running the R5000 app on a different system than sage server, no worries, sage server can crash and restart and reconnect automatically. If it's on the same server, just make sure you start the R5000 app at startup before starting sage server. No issues that way.

#2, Yes, I do that with my DCP501. Works fine.

Welcome to the elite community of R5000 users! Enjoy!

Thanks for the Welcome

I have the R5000 app running on the same machine as the Sage server. And the only way I could get it to work was by starting two instances of the R5000 app., each one using a different port. Are you saying that a single instance of the app., if set up properly, allows for the capture from two R5000 modified receivers ? I couldn't get it to work that way.

Thanks for your help.

I was thinking about getting the R5000 mod done as well. I dont know if it is worth getting over the Hauppuage HD PVR because of price. What is the advantage of getting the R5000?

Hi Berg,

I'm thinking about getting the R5000 mod for two Star Choice receivers too. Hope you don't mind a few questions from a fellow Canadian

1) How much was shipping the boxes to the US? Did you go for ground or air?

2) From the time you shipped the boxes, how long was it before you got them back?

3) Was there any duty/taxes/anything to pay when the boxes came back?

Thanks.

I used Canada Post Expedited Parcel Post and it cost me a little less than $50. They were delivered within 4-5 days.

The boxes were gone about two weeks. The Nexxcom folks had then for two-three days out of that.

You ship the item as for repair and they send them back as the same. No duties/taxes or broker fee.

I could not be happier that I spent the extra money compared to the HD-PVR. I have two other boxes that I may very well send for the same mod down the road.

There is a sale going on right now so it would be the perfect time to have them done.

I am a very happy customer.

Ah, now I see what you are doing. Are you using the multi-r5000 version of the software from Nextcomm? They have one version for single tuner systems, and another version that supports up to 4.

Yes, I am using the version that supports multiple instances, but I could still only get one receiver per instance. Am I missing something ?

Well, if you're missing something then so am I...

I think you can do it with a batch file and the dos "start" command to launch two copies sequentially.

I would contact Nexxtcom directly. They have been very helpful when I emailed them.

One of my boxes arrived back from Nexxtcom and wouldn't change channels so I still have to send it back to them. I haven't gotten to it yet cause one seems to work just fine for me as long as my HDHR still works.
