PS3, linux, and placeshifter
I've been looking around in the forums and I haven't seen much about this, just a couple of threads that never really got anywhere. So, I thought I'd ask this: Has anyone tried using the linux version of the placeshifter client on a PS3 with ubuntu, YDL, etc? Does it work at all (or maybe really slow...)? I honestly don't want to go through the trouble of putting linux on my ps3 if it doesn't, since that's pretty much the only motivation I have to do so.
Afterall, I would love to see a native ps3 placeshifter type client for the ps3 since it already does such a great job as a media center , but who knows if/when that'll ever happen, and using the linux placeshifter might be a good interim solution... if it works. FWIW, I'm currently using DLNA through tversity to stream my sage stuff to the ps3, but it doesn't really work that great: mainly, fast forward doesn't work past 1.5x, so I actually have to sit through commercials... Plus, I'd like to have my stuff get marked "watched" when I watch it! |

I have played with it a bit and have found too many problems to get the place shifter working properly.
The main problem is lack of ram making the entire system run very slow. Next is the complete lack of hardware video acceleration, and reliable DVD playback capability. Last the lack of Flash and JRE Plugin support for firefox/opera seriously handicaps the system. Also the latest Ubuntu/Kubuntu distro does not work with the PS3 yet. All told Linux on the PS3 is not very functional for multimedia functions right now., and your better off using a pc to stream to the Game OS. If anyone has found a way around these problems and has got the placeshifter working please let me know, I'd love to be proven wrong. Also does anyone have a UPnP media server that can transcode and work better than tversity? |

Thanks for the input... I've read in alot of places about media problems, but was hoping placeshifter would be an exception. I'm not too fond of tversity, particularly since it always chokes when I try to fast forward or rewind a video file, but it's the best I've found so far.... bleh. So... a native ps3 placeshifter would be awesome, but again, I doubt it'll happen.
