Microsoft Virtual PC

I'm thinking of implementing Microsoft Virtual PC software as a way of being able to have development, test and production instances of Sage server, all on the same box and thus accessing the same hardware. Both the host and guest Operating Systems will be XP Pro SP2. I haven't yet decided whether to use Virtual PC 2004 or 2007 on the host O/S.

Does anybody have any experience of running the Windows version of Sage in this environment? Are there any problems?

John

Don't expect to be able to connect to any tuners except the HDHR. 2004 didn't have USB support when I used it not sure about 2007. You will not be-able to use PCI or PCI-E based tuners except when they are network encoders installed on a real PC. Playback is possible but only SD I would say and it skipped some when I tried it. The simulated Video is an S3 Trio32/64. I had it installed with SageClient so it is possible that the server will work better but I doubt it. If you can live with those limitations I had no problem using it this way. I've switched to HD100's so I had extra PC's available and now use those as my developement and test systems.

Do the same issues arise when VM Ware is used instead?

Neither will emulate PCI tuners. It might be possible with USB and the HDHR as Bob said.

VPC 2007 still does not have support for USB but VM Ware does.

I certainly cannot say as I only have Virtual PC but I'm sure as mayamaniac and sleonard have said it will be better in that you can at least use USB in addition to HDHR.

The last time I used VMWare (~ November 07) it had only limited support for USB. It worked with the mouse and keyboard, but wouldn't work with a printer. I hope they've fixed that, but I wouldn't count on it.
