can someone post their coreAVC entry in the sage.properties file?

I am running the latest beta but still don't have an option for core AVC filters.
could someone post the line from their properties file with it so I could copy it and try it out manually?

also since core AVC is for HD material only what will sage use for regular files? just the default directshow codec?

thanks!

I don't use coreAVC as I find ffdshow tryouts just as good but typically what I do is set the option in detailed setup to make mpeg4 files use directshow and then it will use your codec instead of the sagetv's player. Then all you have to do is make sure that coreAVC has enough merit to take the file. If I recall core had an option to give it a high merit in its properties if something else is getting in the way.

I don't set anything up within Sage to get CoreAVC working. I just installed it, and it worked by itself.

My MPEG4 shows that it's still setup with SageTV Player. It probably does have mostly to do with merit. If you have something else that is trying to play the files instead, but in my case, I just got an error message before installing CoreAVC.

Media Format Name?

Setherd,

I assume you would like an example of using "videoframe/codec_audio_decoder_filter or videoframe/codec_video_decoder_filter where 'codec' is replaced by the media format name" as described in the beta release notes?

I am trying to edit this manually as well, and I cannot figure out rules for the "media format name" or the decoder name. For example, is the media format name the extension (e.g., .mkv, .avi, .flv, etc) or is it a name like "matroska"? How do I find out what Sage is expecting there? Also, can the Video Decoder names have spaces or do I need to use underscores? I think they can have spaces based on an analysis of my current Sage.properties file.

If anyone has some insight, we would appreciate it.

I wish there was a way to see what codec's were being used in real time. Like when Nvidia pure video's are being used they have a tray icon. Core AVC doesn't have one, so I'd like to see an actual entry in my properties file about it.

Isn't that what Direct Show Filter Manager can tell you? I haven't used it in so long, I forgot what it's for, just noticed it in my group of programs. Also have one called DECCHECKSetup.EXE...

you won't see it as an option anywhere... setting it in the .prop file was basically choosing it. When you access a file that is h264 it should use that decoder.

Arcsoft Decoder

So how do I force SageTV to use the ArcSoft decoder instead?

Okay just to summarize - here's how to switch between the various h264 codecs:
  • Download or install the proper decoder (Cyberlink is a purchase, CoreAVC is a purchase or download from here and ArcSoft gets installed when you install TMC from the HD-PVR disk)
  • Close SageTV and SageTVServices for server PC or SageTV Client on Client PC
  • Edit SageTV Properties and insert one of the following:
  1. If you want to use CyberLink PDVD8 Decoder add the following:
    Quote:
    videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (PDVD8)
  2. If you want to use CoreAVC Decoder add the following:
    Quote:
    videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=CoreAVC Video Decoder
  3. If you want to use Arcsoft Decoder add the following:
    Quote:
    videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=ArcSoft Video Decoder
  4. If you want to use Divx Decoder (in beta) add the following:
    Quote:
    videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=DivX H264 Decoder Filter
  • Save SageTV Properties & Restart SageTV or SageTV Client
You have to do this on each machine. Best results for me are Arcsoft, then CoreAVC and worst was Cyberlink. I'm now getting very good performance from my client PC after doing this and choosing Arcsoft.

Thanks to those above who detailed the sagetv properties lines that needed to be added!

It would be nice if Sage added the ability to switch between h.264 codecs within the settings page instead of needing to go into the properties file.

I received my box last night and here are my results so far...

Initially, I installed only the drivers needed to get the HD-PVR hardware going. After configuring sage/irblaster, recordings occurred without issue.

However, on two different clients (both with speedy dual cores and good gpus), the default sage playback was crap. Next, I tried to play files from PowerDVD 8 and all of them played flawlessly. Strangely, I tried to run the PowerDVD 8 decoder via sage and got terrible results.

So, taking a cue from you guys I went ahead and ran the TME setup exe from the HD-PVR disc, added "videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=ArcSoft Video Decoder" to the client properties, and now Sage plays all recordings smooth as silk.

BTW, I've had no "heat" issues whatsoever with the new box. I've had it running and recording for almost a full day so far and I've yet to have a problem.

So far so good!

I have to use the 'always use directshow' setting in conjunction, is this normal?

Update to Cyberlink PDVD8 for h.264

For those of you trying out the Cyberlink decoder, check out the PowerDVD Update that just came out - it now enables hardware acceleration during H.264 playback.

I haven't tried it yet, but it might make the Cyberlink decoder work better with these H.264 files. As I said earlier the Arcsoft decoder is working best for me, but I'll be trying out the new Cyberlink one tonight just to see how it does.

Use this in your properties file:

Quote:
videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=DivX H264 Decoder Filter
