DishHD package recorded as SD
In anticipation of the HD-PVR becoming available, I have been looking at Dish Network's HD only package. Since the hardware is not available to capture the HD content as of yet, could I output the HD signal from the receiver and record it as SD using my regular Hauppauge coax encoder cards?
EDIT: After doing some more in-depth searching, I've found that I can record from a Vip211 with one of my Hauppauge cards! Would I also be able to control the Dish receivers via the Hauppauge card's IR blaster, or is there a better method for that (serial, etc.)? Any suggestions from current (or past) Dish Network customers is appreciated!

Yes thats how most people do it, use the S Video ports and a USBUIRT to control it.

I'm using the IR blaster from the Hauppauge HVR-1600 to change channels on my VIP211. The HD in SD signal is actually pretty good. Far better than the same that is available in SD over cable.....
btl.

Thanks for the replies!
I just got approval from the S.O., so I'm calling tonight to take the plunge! I'll be keeping Comcast basic cable to record the locals in HD via QAM hooked up to the digital ports on the HVR-1600, and hooking 2 Vip211's up to the analog ports on the 1600 as well. Wish me luck.
