I am planning on purchasing some cables for the extender as well. My question is what cabling should I use. I have seen several posts that state that the HDMI output only outputs sterio audio and not 5.1.
My current plan is to hook the extender to my Receiver using a HDMI cable for the video portion and using a optical cable from the extender to my receiver for the audio portion.
Is this the best way to go for the best quality video and audio? I wasn't sure if I should use component cables versus HDMI cables for the video.
What do you think?

I use HDMI to my receiver and only HDMI and my receiver reports Dolby Digital whenever watching HD thru it. The key is to select the audio out from the SPDIF port and then it will pass 5.1 via the HDMI cable. If you JUST select HDMI for the audio, it will only pass stereo since it thinks it is being hooked to a tv only.
