MVP: remote control

I've read through some MVP remote threads but I don't know exactly how to tailor my search to answer this question.

I'm considering switching from directv to analog Cox Cable (2-99) to watch through SageTV. One thing I like about the directv remote is that I can click a button and without changing channels or calling up the whole screen guide, I can flip through the other channels at the bottom of the screen to see what else is playing on other channels. When watching Cox through the SageTV MPV extender, I press the up and down arrows and nothing happens. When I press menu, I get the current channel on-screen data only. Do I need to program the MVP remote to do this? Btw, it is the larger MVP remote and I have SageMC 6.3.7 loaded at the server but this MVP is still using the standard UI.

Thanx.

SageTV doesn't pass through remote commands to the STB like that.

If you mean that you want SageTV to browse through its own EPG on the playback screen, then that would be a customization & is not part of the default UI.

You will find that live TV sucks, get Commskip and watch what you want when you want without ads.

Once you quit watching live channel surfing and things like this loose their cool factor.

Definitely agree. With the exception of live sporting events, I record and playback almost everything w/ comskip - for me, the crowning jewels of SageTV are extender support and comskip. However, for the wife - a cable news junkee - and my kids, being able to quickly search stations w/out leaving the current program is vital. Jumping between Hanna Montana, Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC is a frequent occurence. Since I posted this question, I have configured Sage so that I can press guide and still have the program showing in a small box in the upper right hand corner, which is ok. But I'd prefer to see the other channel program info at the bottom of the larger viewing screen like I could w/ Directv.

I didn't explain very well - since I need a stb for each tuner with directv, I want to switch to Cox Cable and box up the stb's and quit using directv. I'm currently running parallel (dtv & cox). One of the questions my wife asked is if she can flip through what's showing on the other stations at the bottom of the screen (using cox via sagetv via MVP extender). A friend of mine who runs SageTV v6 for Linux with no customizations and w/ 3 MVPs thought he could do this. He's going to check again when he gets home.

There's the mini guide that does what you want. It is a customization, look here: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15739

For those that don't know what the miniguide is.. It's a way to view the listings for whats on the other channels while you are watching TV. The Info will pop up on the bottom of the screen. This was in Cayars ultimate STV and I believe it originally was written by MLBDude.

I thought about that but I'm trying to keep my SageTV app as lean and clean as possible. When I have problems (I'm still pretty new w/ SageTV) trying to troubleshoot the problem is more complicated with STVs and STVi's etc. I've been putting off upgrading to 6.3.10 just because I'm afraid of the downtime and hours of reading posts I'll have to go through if I have a problem.

I was under the impression this was possible w/ the standard UI and MPV remote but according to Andy, that's not the case.

Add the mini-guide. If it doesn't work go back to the default STV. It will take you all of about 30 seconds. Same with the upgrade. (Just a little more than 30 seconds.) Copy your current install somewhere. Upgrade your current install. Test to see if it works. If everything is fine then import the mini-guide. Done. If it doesn't work just copy your backup over everything and you're right back where you were. If you use SageMC the mini-guide is built in.
