Post Very frustrated..... need help.

FGLRX ati driver.
xorg was generated by aticonfig --initial --force --overlay-type=Xv.

Have 3d on.

If I turn 3d off, I hear the audio, but the video is black or kinda only behind the GUI OSD. its weird.

Extremely frustrated with SageTV so far. Client loads, then poof, its gone after connecting.

Oh, forgot.

I found out pbuffer is not supported by 8.476 of the catalyst, nor any catalyst 8 series driver.

So, does this mean it wont work on linux with any ati card?

This sounds a lot like the problems I was experiencing with the Placeshifter and Ubuntu 7.04. I'm experiencing slightly different problems with Ubuntu 8.04. Check out this thread for some more help: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30244

Ubuntu 8.10. Installing my nvidia card, retweaking the xorg fixes the problem.... However, my nvidia card lacks a great tv out that doesn't have massive 2" black borders.

I had the same issue and that fixed it. Unfortunately, it stopped working again after a recent ubuntu update. I haven't figured out what the new problem is yet.

Forget ATI - HD extender is the way to go.

I've given up on getting fglrx to work with Sage after spending way too much time on it. I think this problem has to do with recent fglrx not supporting a particular color plane (YUV3?). It works with opensource driver, but no TV out.

Nvidia cards work better. But I have not been able to get them to work without enabling opengl (3D), which causes a bit of micro stutter (on HD).

A faster nvidia card probably works better. But with HD extender being at $199 and any decent nvidia card at > $150, I've decided to wait for the HD extender and run the server headless. Actually, I already have one HD extender and it works way better than any PC based solution. IMHO, the best configuration is to run Linux server headless and use HD extenders. It would've been perfect if HD extender included a slot for a DVD/BR drive. May be in the next version.

FYI, HD extender is actually a mini linux box running place shifter.

Sarat.
