So is each customization a full replacement of the default STV (if that is the case, how do the reinstallations still pick up this new update)? Or does each customization effectively "add on" to the base STV, not really replace it?

Also... and I know this is "treading on thin ice" since you don't really have to answer (or know the answer to) questions about "unofficial" customizations... if I follow your instructions to update the default STV and then reinstall all of the customizations (batch or individually), will I have to go through all the set-up of each of them again, or are those settings typically kept elsewhere? Like, for the "MovieTimes" import, would I have to go through the java stuff in studio to add the option on the main menu? And, for the others, would I lose my "default" settings?

I also have seen that some plug-ins (RSS reader, for example) have problems "when installed more than once" (a current discussion in the RSS thread). Does this not apply when you have gone back to the default STV?

Any STV you are using is stand-alone in the sense that the only STV code it is using is the code in that STV. If you install a different base default STV & set it as your STV, then you are not using any STV customizations that you imported previously. All previous imports will have to be imported again into the new base default STV.

How each customization is imported & configured should be a part of its instructions.

An STVI is basically an editing script that modifies the STV it's loaded into and saves the result to a new file. (That's where the -n STV files come from.) This new STV file is self-contained and doesn't depend on the original STV.

As Andy said, if you replace the base STV, you'll have to re-import any STVIs you want to keep using. I don't use MovieTimes, but if a given STVI requires some manual editing steps in Studio as part of its importation process, then you'll probably have to redo those manual steps. (And by the way, the STV code you see in the Studio window is not Java. Studio itself is written in Java, and you can call Java code from Studio code, but the two are not the same thing.)

If a customization has an actual installer, i.e. a separate .msi or .exe file that you must run to install it, you probably won't need to do that again. If you're talking about re-importing an STVI into an STV that has already had that STVI imported into it, that's probably not going to work, and that's probably what you're being warned against. But starting over from the base STV and importing all your STVIs again should work, since each one is being imported just once into that incarnation of the STV.
