Choppy Playback- Variable Frame Rate videos on HD100
Has anyone tried playing back variable frame rate (VFR) encoded files on the HD extender? I have some VFR files I'm trying to play back and they are really choppy on the extender. They are H.264/AAC @ 1600bps files in an mp4 container encoded using Handbrake.
It looks like the scenes at 24 fps play back fine, but the 30fps scenes play back very choppy. The files play back fine on my computers (even Quicktime can handle them). I'm sure you're all wondering: "why do you care about playing back variable frame rate encoded files?" Well, I'm trying to encode my DS9 DVDs to H.264 and store them on my server. But, some scenes in DS9 were filmed at 30 fps, other scenes were filmed at 24 fps. The 24fps scenes didn't look right on either my computer or the HD100. The only thing that worked was to use the variable frame rate feature in Handbrake. Then they play back great on my computers, but the extender doesn't like them. |

Contact Sage support and they'll have you send in a small clip, its the best way to get this resolved.

So, support apparently doesn't believe me that playback is choppy, but it looks choppy to me. Its a little subtle, so maybe I happen to be pickier than most. I can point you to a clip if somebody is willing to test this for me. PM me if you're willing to help out.

The only VFR problem I've seen was with FLV files. The video and audio would rapidly get out of sync. Played back fine on a PC though.

Have you tried VFR mpeg4 files? I can't imagine they're very common, are they?

Does anyone know any other programs besides Handbrake that will let me create VFR encoded videos? I think Sage thinks it's Handbrake's fault and I'd like to test that theory out. The files in Handbrake play back fine it most things besides the HD extender.
