UNC Paths for recording

I am trying to setup a UNC recording path. Although it's on th elocal machine, I have the need for a UNC path. I am running sage as a service and try inputting the path as "\\machine\share\" in the general options screen and it accepts it, but when I try to watch live tv I get general error #4. when I put the recording path back to a drive mapped path Sage behave fine again.

I have read many posts on this but none seem to really explain how to accomplish this. Is there a way to get the Sage service to operate correcly with a UNC recording path?

Thanks,
Skybolt

Yes there is. But as far as I know you need to edit Sage.properties manually to make it work. That's at least what I do.

Make sure the SageTV service is stopped.

Edit the following line in Sage.properties:

seeker/video_storage=\\\\machine\\share,20000000000,3;

Notice the double \\ for one slash (escape characters). Also the 'options' behind the path I'm not sure about. I usually point to the path physically on the server through X:\, then edit the line after that. With same 'options'.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Forgot one thing. It could be the user running the Sage service do not have enough rights for writing through the share you've created. So note if you have SYSTEM or a specific user running the service (recommended is using a specific user, solves other problems). And make sure it have enough rights through the share.

Did you actually share the directory? You need to share it out and allow users access to modify the files. (There's a checkbox for it.)
Once that is done you should be able to use it. Also when you shared it out you can either give it a share name or Windows will give a default name same as the directory you're sharing. Mine is \\MAIN\Videos\SageTV. Videos is the share name I gave it. SageTV it a directory on that share. I have 2 directories on that share-SageTV and DVDs.

You shouldn't have to edit the properties file by hand to use UNC paths.

Make sure the SageTV service is configured to log in as a user w/a password who has permission to use the network paths & make sure the network paths are shared as Gerry said.

Thanks for the quick replys.

Yes - I do have the dir shared with administrators having full control and everyone - read rights. I have tried manually editing the prop. file as described above. This is very strange as it seems to work great for some and as stated others struggle with it. Based on what I have read I have had it configured correctly thus far, pretty straight forward stuff. I'll have to recheck this and try again.

Are you refering the the "Log On" tab in the services console? This shouldn't need to be used if the "Local System Account" has admin rights as most usally do. This could be where I am gettinfg confussed. I will try this later tonight when I get home.

Great Info thanks Guys. This could be a sticky.

Yes-this is what you need to change. You need to change it from a Local System Account to a user with a password in the Administrator group.
