How to add/setup unmanaged drive to WHS

Hi,

I have a WHS server that has 2 managed drives. I put a third drive in and didn't add it to my managed drives. I've seen that the best way to use sage with this is have an unmanaged drive formatted to 64K clusters. However, I don't know how to do it. I went to the drive properties and added a share on this drive, but I can't see it on my network. In fact, I can't see the server on my network. I can use the console on my laptop to access the server (which I know is the preferred way), but when I look at my network, I only see my PC and another on the network- not the server. I've changed my laptop to the WORKGROUP group, to match the WHS default, but it didn't help. Could someone please tell the steps to do this? I seen this mentioned many times, but I can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks for any help,

John

Hi jelentz,

I bought WHS, but I haven't had time to set it up yet, so this is just hearsay. I think I remember reading that you have to create the same account (username and password) on both the WHS server and a given client.

Aloha,
Mike

For "unmanaged" Sage recording drive, connect your drive to WHS, remote into WHS and format the drive from disk management (64k cluster, if you wish). It should show up in WHS as a separate drive (in my case drive E). Bring up Sage client and change settings to record to new drive. Drive properties settings changes are not needed.

Another question: When you say remote into WHS - is that with the console? I didn't see a disk management there. I know where it is when I sit in front of the computer, but not sure what "remote into" means.

Thanks for helping the newbie.

You can RDP into WHS desktop from your client PC/laptop. If from vista client, Click start and type in remote desktop connection in search box. click connect and you should get access to WHS desktop.

Don't have XP, so not sure the exact method, but should be click start, run, in the box, type in remote desktop connection or the file name mstsc.exe should do it. Basically, within WHS console, you have limited access to WHS. Within WHS Desktop, you pretty much have full access.

Nice! Thanks for the info. I've seen RDP mentioned, didn't know it was remote desktop. I'm running Vista, so I'll give it a try when I get home.

Thanks so much,

John
