v6.3.5 Setup menus are unreadable

A virus brought down my computer so I just loaded windows xp fresh today - figured I'd try out the newest version of sage, only to run into the following problem - I can't get through setup at all.

It looks as though several setup windows are overlapping - I can vaguely see directory listings, menu options, bulletted lists everywhere, words on top of words, everything on top of everything, can hardly read anything at all, can't see what I'm choosing. Even on the clearer menus, the highlight bar is so opaque I have to move it out of the way to see any words at all. This looks like a total disaster already.

Try turning off the animation. If the screen are totally unreadable see http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthr...33&postcount=7 for how to turn it off in the configuration file. Sage must be completely shutdown before you can edit the configuration file.

This is in the default STV, right? Did you restore any files for SageTV, or did you do a fresh install? If a restore, try getting rid of sage.properties and/or sageclient.properties to reconfigure everything.

If you are using an older .properties file, had you previously customized the background & that file isn't there now?

Are your video card drivers and Java up to date?

Thanks a bunch. I read your suggestion about settting all the lines with "animation" in it to "false" - that cleared up the menus. I should be able to get through setup now.

I'm curious: what type of video card do you have & how much memory does it have? Is it a basic video card that is built into the motherboard, by any chance?

I'm having the same problem and yes, I'm using the Intel E7221 card built into my motherboard. I'll try turning off the animation.

What version of Java are you using? If it isn't the latest version of 1.6, try updating Java & post your results.

You can check the Java version used by SageTV near the top of the System Information screen.

BFG Nvida Geforce 7300 GT 512MB ddr2. I don't have onboard video.

I had downloaded the latest Java thinking that was the problem (I think it was version 6.3 or something like that) but when I tried to install it I got the message, "This operating system not supported." (I am running XP Pro no service packs). I seem to recall getting the impression that I needed to download a service pack. But I never did so, hence I never got the Java install done.

One thing is clear - setting all the animation lines to false cleared up the menus immediately.

If Java is not up to date, that could be one reason. As I mentioned above, you can check the Java version used by SageTV near the top of the System Information screen -- what does it list?

If it says you are using Java v1.6 & you still have issues using the animations, then please file a bug report.

Edit: If your new installation was using an older .properties files, then someone else commented that they removed those files, reconfigured SageTV, and it worked. (If you remove the properties files, you should also remove the .autobackup copies.)

I just experienced the same problem with setup menus that was also fixed by turning off animation. I almost gave up on Sage before I got started. My setup: SageTV V6.3.10.166, Java Version 1.6.0_04, AMD AthlonXP 2600+ 1.92 GHz, 736MB, Gigabite motherboard with on-board video and VIA KM400 chipset.
