If you search the forum for 0x80040256, you'll find this, among similar links. Reinstalling or updating the sound card drivers seems to fix the problem.

The only sound card I have in the sagetv machine is the sound card built in the MCE500. Is that enough or I need to install a real sound card in there?

If you're talking about your MCE500 tuner card that is not your sound card. You need a sound card either built into the motherboard or an actual PCI card put into one of the slots in your comupter or a USB sound device. Any of these would connect up directly to speakers or to a seprate receiver so you can hear sounds and music from your PC.

Ok, so Instead of using real sound card, I installed Virtual Audio Cable and that fooled the XP machine in thinking there is an audio card in the PC.

Next step is getting MultiDCTTuner to work with my Motorola QIP2500-3
